Hi, I'm ALMOST done with a B.A. in Communications. I need 4 credits from an internship to graduate. However, I realized before I start applying to internships I need a good resume.

I'm using samples online to try and put a decent one together, but honestly I feel like it's pretty baron. The last job I was able to get I was let go from (because they went under) in May 2009 (though I did work there for almost 3 years).

Besides that I don't actually have a degree yet...still 4 credits away. I don't really have "honors" or "awards" to list other than I consistently made the Dean's List due to my GPA over my 4 years. Most of extra-curricular activity focused on creating short films (my major) and writing, both things I intend to list in the "Skills" section.

But I don't have a huge employment history or a lot of professional contacts or honors. I'm trying to get a job through a temp agency right now to bolster my job section (and save up money for commuting).

So basically I'm looking for links that help me bolster my student resume. Anyone have any comprehensive links, and more importantly, VISUAL samples I can base my resume on? When applying to this temp agency, should I give them my bare-bones resume or just rely on the interview?

Although any schools (including your own) should work.

Once you have something, bring it to your school’s career services or at least make an appointment and go over it by phone with a career counselor.

In general would it be better to try and work some temp work first so that I can put that on my resume, or I should I make appoints with my college’s career center first? Because my resume just seems too bare at this point…

Most of my “activity” time is spent on writing/directing short films or working on other people’s short films as an actor or crew member. I’m listing that in the activities section and it adds some points to “skills” but I feel like my experience and education parts and still so shaky.

If I’m in progress of finishing my degree, do I list (In progress) in parenthesis or something? Should I list an “Associate’s” degree since I’ve done 2 years of school?

You’re actually far better of than most college students. Seems like you have good GPA and some work experiences. Employers do not expect you to have a lot of work experience, because your a college student.

If you made Dean’s list, I’m guessing that it’s at least 3.5. That GPA is more than good enough for you major. I’ve known couple communication majors and it seems that GPA is not a significant factor when it come to employment as long as your over certain threshold (3.0)

Again, many college students do not have a lot of work experience related to their major in college. One of the best ways to improve your resume is to do community service. Volunteers are always needed and can help you land an interview. With everything you said about yourself, you should couple phone calls before you graduate. Also, really improve your interview skills; after all, you’re majoring in communications.

Hey so I’m applying to some temp jobs soon and wanted a resume critque…anyone willing to critique it just say so and I’ll PM you (or just PM me).

Can you get some help from your school’s Career Office? They are the best resources available on most campuses. My son at ASU got some very good help to write his first resume while a freshman there a couple years ago.
