Need help with recommendation note

I have worked for a tutoring school for quite sometime and needs a recommendation letter/proof for my college application but the owner said he doesn't know how to write one so he asked me to write it and he will stamp/sign it. But I, too, have absolutely no knowledge on how to write the note so can anyone help me out? Thank you!

Your boss is putting you in a very difficult situation, and I find it odd that the owner of a tutoring school doesn't know how to write a recommendation letter. Perhaps you could draft something and let a third party (like an English teacher) look it over, both for content and to take a bit of the stigma off your writing your own recommendation.

Whoever writes it, specifics are generally better. "Vehement was a hard worker and very dependable" is nice but won't do anything for you beyond verifying that you were involved in that activity.

"Vehement's students saw an average increase of 42% in their test scores, the highest of any of our tutors" would be better.

Still better would be an interesting anecdote of how you solved a particular problem. "When Billy arrived at our school, he had no interest in learning and was openly hostile to our staff. Vehement exhibited great patience and tenacity, though, and earned Billy's confidence and trust. Soon, Billy became one of our best-performing students. With Vehement's help, Billy not only caught up to his grade level but began getting advanced material from his teacher. Without Vehement's commitment to helping others and friendly but persistent nature, Billy (and no doubt many of our other students) would not be achieving at the levels they are today."

That might be larding it on a bit thick, but I'm sure you get the idea. :)

Thank you for the reply.

While that would nice, I am not actually a teacher. I am what you would call an intern; doing all of the stuff no one else wants to do, such as copying papers, sending out letters and perhaps grade a few SAT tests/essays but thats about it. All I want is evidence that shows I have worked there for a certain amount of hours so I am wondering if anyone has a structure which I can follow when I write the note?

I need to get this done by tomorrow. hope someone can provide immediate relief. thanks once again

This is kinda urgent..would really appreciate if someone can help me out here......

You don't want to see me beg do you? Help a poor boy out!

hey vehement, i am also an intern, and my boss agreed to write one for me. i will leave some identifiable information out, alright?

since i am there as an intern, he wrote about how i was always taking the initiative to learn about his company. initially i started off doing office work, like photocopy, arranging files. then he wrote about how, even with office work, i took some of the files out to read. and then there's the renovation work. he put me in charge of supervising the renovation workers. he then wrote about how some of my suggestion made teh whole first floor (where the renovation took place) look so much better (leadership, creative, inventive, able to work without receiving direct orders, etc.)

something along the lines of that. hope it helps.

Thanks.

Where did he write it? On a regular a4 peice of paper? Where should I put how long I have worked there for? thanks

Up..........

All he needs to say is, "Vehement X worked at my Tutoring service x hours a week for XX months and his work included filing, copying, and occasionally grading essays."

Are you sure that you need this kind of proof to enclose with your applications? Usually colleges take your word for this kind of thing and do not want letters from employers/advisors, etc. simply stating that you participated in an activity.

The only reason to have a recommendation from an employer is if the employer will say something remarkable about you. From what you've described, there's nothing remarkable about what you've done, and the only reason you want the letter is to provide proof that you've worked. In general, those kind of recommendations are not necessary.

If you were doing the kind of thing that Roger Dooley described, that would be impressive and could be a good extra recommendation to include. However, what you're describing is ordinary and is not going to add anything to your application.

NSM is right. if you just want proof, it's on your app. don't need to prove that you're proving it. Asians (I'm taking a wild stab that you're ASian) tend to want to supplement everything with solid proof, something which I'm told does not go well with the adcoms. All you need to do is to write that you did X and Y, colleges will take your word to it that it's true (the honor code system).

Oh I took your advice and wrote 4 paragraphs....

i wrote sth along the lines of roger's example..do you think it would really help?
