Need More Financial Aid

Hi everyone!

I’m finding my financial aid a bit lacking. My EFC was a bit over 5000 when I submitted FAFSA, but my family is expected to contribute around 25k per year. Is there any way I can appeal? Thanks.

Did you submit the CSS?

@twoinanddone yeah I did

@birdsandoats yes you can appeal by calling the financial aid office at Penn. I would advise doing it asap.

@Penn95 I will send them an email, if not tonight, then tomorrow. We’re running through our forms one more time.

sucks :confused: good luck

According to the OP’s other thread, they own a second piece of real estate…a rental property. This could very well impact this financial aid award.

In addition, the OP has not mentioned whether they own their primary residence…I believe Penn uses some amount of primary home equity as well…and that isn’t on the fafsa at all.

Asking for a friend - where is the FA info located? Is it in the portal or sent separately?

The office is going to be bombarded today, but it’s definitely negotiable even for ED students. Once you’re attending as a student, you can also just walk into the office and tell them your parents cannot contribute that much. From everything I’ve heard, they’re very generous once they meet you in-person.

^^^^^^. Do. Not count on that

@thumper1 we own our primary residence. But I’m pretty sure the amount my family has to pay is more than half of our total income (job + rent).

@birdsandoats

That’s not what I asked. I asked what the equity in your primary residence is. Honestly…your cash outlay has nothing to do with this.

So…what is the house currently worth…in other words, if you sold it, how much would it sell for? Do your parent have a mortgage? What is that amount?

Also, on your other thread…in the financial aid forum, you indicate that your parents are self employed. It is VERY possible that deductions allowed by the IRS for tax purposes were added back in as income for financial aid purposes.
