1) Son of friend with solid B-B+ average at an academically demanding high school
2) SAT around 1250
3) Athlete-not recuited-who wants a school with spirit and decent sports facilities
4) Mid-sized school (between 4,000-10,000 undergrads) with a campus (not a city school) in the midwest or northeast
5) An easy-going, likable, big-hearted, people-person who will end up in a field with lots of people contact
6) Frats okay, would like to avoid preppy or artsy: politically liberal
7) Will probably major in social sciences
8) Co-ops might be a good option
9) Does not need financial aid

Any suggestions? Lehigh was on his list but he hadn't gotten much further.

Social Sciences? 1250 SAT? Sounds like your son needs a small school, not a mid-sized one.

Here's some suggestions:

Depauw- most ideal for your son's intersts from what I saw
Denison
Kalamazoo- might be too liberal, but awesome rep. after graduation.
SUNY Genesso
Ohio University
Lake Forest

Anyways, that should be a good start. Lehigh does NOT sound ideal for your son at all.

In the midwest, Butler and Valparaiso would be very good matches. Butler is in Indianapolis but in a residential area far from downtown, and it has a distinct campus. Valpo is in a smaller town. Both are the right size, have great school spirit and athletics facilities, and are solid universities but are not terribly selective. Drake in Iowa would be another good match.

Syracuse
University of Rochester
University of Miami
University of Denver
University of Vermont
George Washington
American
University of Delaware

I second Xavier. I go there now and love it! Sounds like he would be a great fit. It's not in the city, but on the outskirts of Cincinnati so it has a real "campus" feel. We have a real community here that's really focused on doing well, having fun while supporting our sports' teams, and doing service. We don't have an established frat life, but if he's into going out, he could find someplace to go. I'm not a party animal myself though, and I still have a great weekend around town. Plus our Student Activities Council always has an event going on. We have a great reputation in the community for graduating well rounded students. Almost everyone does some sort of co-op while they're here and everyone is super friendly!
