Hey everyone. I’m a rising Senior, class of 2017.
I’m interested in STEM field mainly and has done quite a bit of research on the Universities other than Liberal Art Colleges. A lot of people think that LACs do not provide the best programs for STEM students. But I have some really great classmates go to LACs for fields like Bio. Just want to know what schools should I look into.
A little about me:
Stats:
SAT: 1470 on new SAT (not good after looking at concordance table) , 22/24 on Essay part, 800 math ii, 770 physics
AP: Micro Econ, Macro Econ, Chem, Calc BC, Physics C Mechanics, Physics C E&M, Computer Science, Physics 1, Physics 2, APUSH
EC: Varsity Scholars Bowl( Quiz Bowl) 8 tournament champs this year, Football + Basketball film and stats analysis ( F state RU, Bball State Champ), Math Club Founder+ Varsity Captain (with gold medals), Amateur Radio Direction Finding ( 8 years of playing, twice selection of National U19 Team, U19 16th place in World tournament 2012)
Major: STEM are all good. But looking a Material science/ engineering, physics, chem and stats ( with emphasis on sports)
I’m international students studying in US. Love smaller school that I can build up deeper relationship with prof and classmate.
Please give me advice for LACs that are good in these STEM field. If there’s any other suggestion about non LACs plz reply as well.
Thank you for your times
And good luck to everyone!
There are literally dozens of strong LAC’s with STEM strength. It might help if you could narrow it down for us to help you out.
Do you have any geographic preference, area of the US? How about campus setting–urban, suburban, rural, small town? Do you need merit aid or financial aid, or are you full pay?
The NESCAC LACs will all have excellent biology and chemistry with a great sports culture. Bucknell, Lafayette and Lehigh are very good undergraduate engineering schools with a vibrant sports culture in Patriot League.
“… has done quite a bit of research on the Universities”
If your son or daughter has done quite a bit of research he/she may have found a few LACs that are very strong in STEM. But I disagree with the previous posters suggesting that there are dozens that are strong in STEM if engineering is at all in the picture, which you say it is. There are a few very strong ones but not that many.
Bucknell is a great LAC for undergrad engineering. If you take out the service academies, it would be in the top 5 nationally. And it’s a very large and well funded major at Bucknell.
Addendum to #7 – Lafayette has a big sports rivalry with neighboring Lehigh (a mid-size university) which is a lot of fun for the students – and has D1 sports. For full disclosure my D just graduated from Lafayette. She did research directly with a two professors during her time at the school.
May depend on the subject. Engineering, particularly less common ones like materials, can be less common at LACs. Statistics may be subarea of the math department in some a smaller schools. For physics, perhaps Reed or Oberlin?
@ColdinMinny Thanks, I would prefer warmer region if possible. I’m from a warm place. Campus setting doesn’t really matter. I would like some international students scholarships (mostly merit based), but I’m also looking at the ones that don’t have. Thanks
