Currently still in highschool with a miserable 2.8 UW GPA, but I like to plan ahead and research rather than take it one step at a time.

If my plan was to go to Georgia Tech then attempt to get accepted into a medical school (say Emory), and get DENIED, what could be some degrees I could obtain at GT as well while getting the pre-requisites for medical school? I know BME is one but are there any other options?

Note: I am not in any way saying I can get into GT with a 2.8 GPA, depending on how much junior and senior year go I will most likely go to Georgia Perimeter for the RETP program OR see how I feel about going to a different college I get accepted at and try to transfer after a year when the time comes to decide.

I would like to add that I know nowadays you should know whether or not you have what it takes to get into medical school as it is very competitive. But having backups is always great.

you could get a biomedical engineering degree! most people say that it’s a reliable backup if you don’t get into med school, or you’re just not plain interested in medicine as a career.

I think as long as you take the required courses for Med school you could do any of the majors. For example Mechanical Engineering has this when they list the CHEM requirement:

CHEM 1310: CHEM 1211K can substitute for CHEM 1310. CHEM 1211K & 1212K are recommended for pre-health students

BME makes sense for pre-med, but not so much as a fall back plan. Careers in BME really require a Masters (so the back-up plan would be going to grad school for BME in case you don’t go to med school).

On the other hand, you can take a more standard undergrad degree (ME, EE, etc) and still have the option of going to Grad school for a Masters in BME or Med School. You could even minor in BME, as you get your ME or EE degree.
