Hey all, next year (Senior year) I am going to be taking:

AP Physics
AP European History
AP Calculus
Honors English

...for my core classes. Some of my friends are doubling up on the Sciences and taking two AP science classes (like Physics and Bio/Chem). Because I suck at taking standardized tests (SAT, but not so much ACT - ACT is better :D ), I have to worry about my class rank being the representation of my true abilities as a student (right now, I am 6th in my class in my Junior year).

My question is this: Should I take the extra AP class and deal with the tremendous work load (the English is not a piece of cake either), or should I take it? At my school the AP classes are worth 6 points towards your class rank, but only if you get an 'A'. I am worried that if I take the extra AP class, I might fall behind an 'A' in any one of the other AP's.

I'd say no, if you want to maintain that rank. That's lucky that your grades are somewhat weighted for class rank. Ours aren't at all, and I'm taking 5 APs next year. :(

Yea, they should overlook the poor SAT score; I know that the University of Pittsburgh will accept an SAT score OR an ACT score - they treat the test score on one test as being an equivalent score if you took the other test. I.E - If I get a 29 overall on the ACT, that counts as a 1300 on the old SAT.

Thanks for the input Bethlikesun! Anyone else?

Programmer, I'm in the exact same position as you are (5th in my class and didn't do so hot on the ACT so class rank is one of my main show-off areas to colleges). What are you majoring in? If it's like math or computer science (your username is programmer, just taking a guess) well maybe double up on math or sciences that year and drop another AP or take an easier class. I'm majoring in medical field so i took AP bio this yr and next yr AP Chem, with Calc AB (and english and U.S. Govn't). It's very possible too that colleges won't receive your grades by the time you're accepted since it's senior yr and all. If you start having trouble you8 could always move down a class after you send in your applications. Colleges will look at your strong scheduele as a huge selling point.

Well, for sciences my school offers:
AP Biology
AP Chemistry
AP Physics

Math:
AP Calculus AB
AP Calculus BC

English:
AP English

History:
AP U.S History

AP European History

AP classes are only offered in your senior year at my school (except for AP U.S History), so it's rather a big decision because you only get one shot - your senior year, so it's tough for me. I mean I want to do well in the AP classes that I will be in, so I just don't know how many to take w/o "dying."

I am also majoring in medical field, only I plan to take the path of Dentistry. I was actually going to take two sciences without a math in my senior year, but people have convinced me that it's important to take 1 more year of math because I might get college credit for it (since the U.of.Pittsburgh only makes you take 1 calculus class for Dentistry, so I wouldn't have to waste time on Math when I don't need it lol).

You're lucky you can take AP classes in years before senior; heck, if that were the case at my school, no problem. I jjust wish my school didn't MAKE me take history and english - it's so gay.

Yeah, my school makes us take english and history, but there isn't an honors course so it's AP or regular (which would drop my class rank a lot). I'm actually going into Pharmacy which is almost identical to Dentistry. I just finished the AP Bio class. That's a good one for a medical career, the MCAT or whatever test you need to tak to get liscencing has a bio section on it and it's simple once you take AP BIo (i'm not gunna lie, i picked up a copy of the PCAT-Pharmacy study guides and it's simple compared to everything you learn). It's possible that you could take classes in the summer so next year will seem easier. For Calc, i'm taking pre-calc so i have a good background. Are you planning on having a study-hall...having one saved me, but some people don't do well with one for whatever reason. Do matter what, take the classing that you find exciting or enjoyable, the classes that if you gotta work your butt off at least you wanted to be in that class and you're passionate about the subject. I type alot i guess... if you have any questions just drop me a line...
zumy

Does anyone else have either AP classes or "regular" classes to choose from? That would be terrible...no alternative but to go into classes that aren't worth anything.
