Need target/safety ideas please

While it is far too early to be focusing on colleges except in general, looking at a bunch of safeties may not be a bad idea for you, especially if you are trying to figure out finances, because parents need to start thinking about colleges finances when their kid is in elementary school.

If your kid is the high school class of 2024, that means that he is a rising Junior. That means that he has taken four out of the six to seven semesters that will be considered when he applies for college. Moreover, Junior year is the most difficult year so far, so it is possible that his GPA will drop.

So when you think about safeties, do not think about safeties under the assumption that his GPA remains 4.0, but take into consideration that he may have a few Bs. So see what would be a safety if his GPA dropped to 3.8 (if it drops more, that would indicate issues which are more important than choosing safety colleges).

As for SAT scores - has he done the PSAT 10? If so, what was his score? A PSAT 10 in Sophomore spring which is 1400 or higher would point to a 1500+ SAT score. While many kids get a PSAT 10 which is lower than 1400 and still get 1500+ on the SAT, but again, it is better to be “conservative” when figuring out what will be a safety or even target.

Back to your question. In addition to the recommendations here, I would add UIUC. While for some reason it doesn’t get a lot of love on CC, it has one of the top psychology programs in the country, and the Champaign-Urbana area is as progressive as Chicago, or even more so.

Even if your kid does not do as well in his junior years as in his previous two years, UIUC is likely to be a safety, or a low target at most.

If the school is calculating an A+ class as more than 4.0, that doesn’t sound unweighted. Though since many colleges recalculate GPA’s based on their own criteria anyway, not sure it matters.

I would not recommend Queen’s for this student. Outside of the university, and to some extent within, it’s a very conservative environment, by Canadian standards anyway. Kingston is much smaller than Toronto - 150K population vs. 6.3M.
