Alright so I’m substituting University of Southern California for U mich and taking out Berkeley and Dartmouth. I might take out Princeton as well.

^^ I would , and add one more match that you would be happy, not reluctant, to go to.

Dam, do you guys know any colleges in which the deadline for scholarship is due later than December 1 (or is that nonexistent?).

what is your list again? I know that USC’s deadline for all parts of your application is Dec 1. There are no merit scholarships at any of the Ivys, or Stanford , or Cal Tech. MIT says this:

“We refer to the grant money offered directly by the Institute as an MIT scholarship even though we award it based solely on financial need. If you’re interested in receiving an MIT scholarship for undergraduate study, you need to apply for MIT financial aid each year.”

so no early scholarship deadline for MIT either

Carnegie Melon requires you to apply for FA in order to nbe considered for the Carnegie scholarship :
Carnegie Scholarships

Carnegie Mellon offers a Carnegie Scholarship to incoming first-year students. Carnegie Scholarships are awarded to academically and artistically talented middle income students who qualify for little to no need-based financial aid. Carnegie Scholarships are open to all qualified U.S. citizens and permanent residents, regardless of race or national origin. You must apply for need-based financial aid to be considered.

<a href=“Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University”>Home - Computing Services - Office of the CIO - Carnegie Mellon University;

Put “net price calculator” and/or “financial aid estimator” in each school’s web site search box. Use it to get an estimate of cost and financial aid. Eliminate any school with no realistic chance of being affordable.

Rice requires no separate application.They say:
All admitted freshman applicants are automatically considered for merit-based scholarships, so that no separate application forms or interviews are necessary. The Office of Admissions notifies scholarship winners at the time of admission to the university. The following is a list of some of our 2011-2012 merit-based scholarships.

dont know about your safeties

If you feel like you would not fit in at Princeton or Dartmouth, I don’t see why you would take Michigan off your list…

If you have a shot at getting into top schools like these you would probably get into Michigan honors program AND it might be a good fit

^ Except the OP is OOS and would pay $50K/year.

why the constraint on the # of applications? Is that a requirement of your guidance counselor?

No but I probably won’t have time to do all those college apps.
