I was under the impression that Northeastern isn't really as "campus-oriented" either. Anyways, NYU is a LOT better school, so you'd be making a mistake IMO.

and for music business major it would be the best place to go right? even though im not gettin any money from them...

It's like every goddamn scene these days; emo/screamo/metalcore kids, clove smoking hipsters, that whole deal. The other side is hip-hop/pop.

As a metalhead, I can state with authority that the music scene does, in fact, suck.

That shouldn't affect your decision to apply or not though...I'm just expressing distaste of the scene.

Uh yeah I would guess NYC is a much better place for someone wanting to get into the music business than Boston.

I imagine that NYU would have one of the best, if not the best, music scenes of any college in the country, since EVERY band I can think of plays NYC when they tour. I feel like Firewalker could go to as many shows as he wanted to, he just chooses not to. Plenty of metal bands play New York.

no sense of campus community
not much school spirit
for girls: can't wear sweat pants to classes. (fyi, nyu students do not wear school logo hoddies or sweat pants around campus. if they do, hmm..."L"?)

^ really? i pretty much live in sweatpants. but NYU colors aren't that great anyway.

When CBGB closed, a part of my soul died.

I've been to plenty of metal shows here.

My point is that NYU's music scene is garbage. As in, the STUDENTS, after all they make up NYU's music scene. And to insinuate that the Village has a formidable metal scene? Laughable. Hell, even the NOVA metal scene dwarfs the one here.

I go to gigs all the time in the area. There's a lot of ben folds-y kinda stuff. And band-y bands too. And I don't wear anything other than sweatpants. And I see people in school-wear all the time. I think people are LESS dressed-up here.

Lots of indie concerts around here. In the summer, a lot of them are free :D

are you kidding, music scene here is a lot better than at other school's. I know plenty of people that go to the UC's who only listens to like mainstream stuff and like Jack Manequin and **** like that. I mean, NYU Kimmel is like a popular venue for some of the more underrated bands-- Matt & Kim, Les Savy Fav and some others played here.

And if you just go to ohmyrockness.com there is like a LOOOONG list of bands that are touring here all the time. I find that most students (bigger proportion compared to other schools at least) have pretty diverse music taste (aka they dont just listen to mainstream things on the radio) but again music and scene is all really subjective anyway.

AS WITH SOME OTHER THINGS ABOVE

I disagree that MAP is BS. I'm probably like the only person at the school who thinks this but I really love MAP and Writing the Essay. Especially WTE, Con West, and Expressive Cult:Film-- changed my life (in a very non-teenage and cliche way, of course). I really think it does it job in trying to educate students of some important things that everyone should just know an also in comparison to other liberal arts college, MAP is nothing. Students elsewhere spend like the majority of their years doing requirements and **** (like Core Curriculumn at Columbia). Also it really exposes you to a range of things, so that you can major/minor in them and/or to confirm that your current major is what you're really interested in.

I'll have to disagree. Indie rock? Not my cup of tea. Metal is life.

"for girls: can't wear sweat pants to classes. (fyi, nyu students do not wear school logo hoddies or sweat pants around campus. if they do, hmm..."L"?)"

I wear sweatpants almost everyday...and I see a lot of sweatpants and hoodies worn by other people...we're just the lazy people who don't care what we look like :)

umm i love to wear sweat pants and sweat shirts so if we aren't allowed to do that then what kind of college is this?!

Lmfao, "allowed"? Noones dictating what you should or should not wear, buddy.

I think she meant socially allowable, not an actual rule. Also I'm still puzzled by the fact that you can't find a metal scene in New York. Seriously, you must not be looking very hard.

Socially allowable? Who cares. Secondly, you'll find out soon enough when you come here. ;)

firewalker, I'm pretty sure that seemstazz was referring to euphoria's comment that girls "can't wear sweatpants to class". I'm beginning to think that euphoria doesn't really go to NYU. So many of her answers are soooo far from the reality of attending NYU. Anyway, yeah, there are people who wear sweatpants, there are people that wear NYU logo clothes, you can pretty much find people wearing just about every conceivable thing to class. No one cares what you wear.

As for negatives about NYU, most of them for me would be related to living in the city. It's great sometimes but after the initial 'glow' wears off, it's a noisy, dirty place that a lot of people find very unfriendly. And, of course, NYU is ridiculously expensive.

^^^it's not that dirty, maybe during the winter

Hahaha. Sure, the novelty wore off quickly, but you gotta love it!
