Negatives of Oxy?

Name recognition/reputation - few people know of the school, even if it's ranked fairly high

Terrible Administration - disorganized, constantly changing, unstable, money-hungry, little aid/interaction with school clubs/groups

Too PC/liberal - forces diversity so that it's "alienating." conservatives feel out of place

Too few classes - registration issues, selection/choices, lacks some programs

Too small - everyone knows everyone's business and you don't meet as many different kind of people

Can current students or whatever speak to these? Please be honest. And if some are true, is it worth going in spite of it?

1) Yes name recognition is quite bad- except that it's ranked so high because employers and grad schools know ALL ABOUT Oxy, contrary to what peers or parents know.

2) Past few years - I agree, a pretty bad administration. We just got a new president, though, and Oxy's quite optimistic about having a stable 10+ years or so.

3) True, conservatives do feel quite out of place. There are actually a good number of conservatives if you look for them however. Oxy needs conservatives though, or else the equilibrium is tipped a bit too far to the left.

4) Yes registration/class sizes are pretty limited. Valid point. It pretty much depends on your registration time as to whether you'll get the classes you want. Except -- if you need a class for your major, they cannot deny it to you if you petition.

5) I agree that it is quite small and you know everyone's business. I disagree that you don't meet different kinds of people. I meet new and different people ALL THE TIME. That's a common misconception. It's the right amount of people: it's unrealistic that a student at UCLA, which has thousands more students than Oxy, would meet more people just because the population is larger.

I'm a first year student, and personally I love Oxy for the goods and bads of it. I am enjoying every day of it here :)

Most of your negatives are the reasons I want to go to Oxy. Liberal, small, small classes, etc. I don't really have anything to add, I just think that's interesting.
