Final list he applied to: UMBC, RPI, Case Western, Missouri U. of Science & Technology, Rose-Hulman, Stevens Institute of Technology, RIT. Got scholarships to UMBC, Missouri S&T; got into Case, still waiting to hear from the rest. His ACT scores ended up being excellent, as were his teacher recs. Just wanted to report!

jetcat, I strongly encourage you (if you have not done so already) to have your son tested by a cognitive psychologist with a background in learning issues. Your school GC or possibly your physician should be able to connect you with a practice in your area that does testing at various fee levels depending on the extent of analysis.

Also, get in touch early with the accommodations/disabilities/learning support office at the school you choose to discuss issues such as extra time on tests. Also look into learning technologies such as the LiveScribe “Smart Pen”,audio tapes, Kurzweil text-to-speech machines, etc.

It sounds like your S has a discrepancy between verbal and performance IQ. This can be addressed by a competent learning professional who can point him to techniques (and equipment) to compensate for slowness in reading and other processing tasks.

He’s at UMBC - and very happy there. It’s definitely nerdy. (There are also a lot of jocks on campus, too.) Last night he went to a Magic the Gathering fair, and Friday was a Linux Installfest. Got scholarships to RIT, Case, Rose-Hulman, Missouri S&T (his second favorite). UMBC is happening right now - enthusiastic professors, rated high in teaching, named #1 school to watch by USNews, U. President named top 10 univ. presidents, etc. Plus it’s almost free with the merit aid he got. He got a really high ACT score (and perfect science subscore), which helped. Thanx everyone. Successful outcome!

I just saw on my local PBS station last night a program that included a segment about the wonderful things going on at UMBC. The President seems to be a very dynamic guy.

Thanks so much for the update! I am a frequent lurker and reports back like this really help me to gather info. Please report back after 1st semester as well.

Give yourself a big pat on the back – your son may have gotten the scores/grades for the acceptances & merit, but you deserve all the credit for finding a school that fit your son’s strength and personality!

That is a great outcome! I’m glad to hear that there’s so much on campus for him.

That’s great OP! Your S sounds like he has a lot in common with my D (MS&T) - at least it came in second LOL!
