Mudd would defintely have nerdy fun. But it only has STEM majors - it would not work for somebody that “wants to study psychology and anthropology, maybe”.

Beloit and Earlham might be worth a look. Both have their fair share of quirky, nerdy kids without taking it overboard. I don’t know if anyone has written about them more recently, but a few years ago former poster Carolyn spoke highly of both and wrote extensively about Beloit.

Beloit is particularly good for anthropology, and Earlham has a very high percentage of international students (17%).

Here’s some nerdy fun that happened at Earlham just this weekend:

[Earlham College Hackathon - YouTube](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--uVwfJ7MIA)

They worked for 24 hours straight!

On a more frivolous note, there’s the hugely popular annual Air Guitar contest, and SpringFest which features pedal-cars and bouncy castles.

If she has any interest in Southern California, look at the Claremont College consortium - Scripps (womens college), Pitzer and Pomona (in addition to Harvey Mudd). Pitzer is nerdy, liberal and fun. But somewhat pricey.

Lots of international students at those three.

She could also look at Bryn Mawr/Haverford/Swarthmore. DD says they have lots of “nerdy fun” (Dr. Who, HP, and the like.) Size is right, good amount of internationals, Bryn Mawr has lots of community activities and a good Anthropology dept. Philadelphia is easily reachable and they even offer free train tickets on weekends.

colorado_mom makes a good point about the fields of study vis a vis Harvey Mudd. Sorry, my thoughts run in a straight line from “nerdy” to STEM. But the Claremont College Consortium mentioned by coralbrook would be a good idea, I think. I formed the impression somewhere that xiggi goes/went there? If so, xiggi would be a good contact.

Willamette?

Thanks to all for the ideas… I wish she would think of Grinnell, her brother is an alum, but she is most definitely wanting to ‘do her own thing.’ She met the rep from Beloit and Carleton and Lewis and Clark at a fair and liked all of them. She likes Kalamazoo and Macalaster, too. She also liked Colorado College and Skidmore which I am not sure fits the bill. She does want small, and she wants a place where the edge is off… !

Thanks, again!

Hendrix College

I’m going to make another plug for women’s colleges. Small, very supportive academically, and with tons of nerds :)
