NEU FAQs Answered

:) thanks!

Emily2007, any chance they can put a sticky on this one so it’s always there at the top? It’s good and should need to be repeatedly bumped.

very informative! i really hope i get in. especially after reading that hotter girls go to NEU ;)

wow this was really helpful. Thanks Emily!

Nicely done, thanks for the work and intro to NEU.

Thanks for posting this, really helpful threads! Are pharmacy co-ops similar to other science major co-ops (chem/bio)?

Nope, they aren’t. Pharmacy kids must do one co-op in retail (aka CVS) and one in hospital (aka Mass Gen). It’s a pretty structured system, although I presume there is some variance within the jobs (like some might be more research while others just count pills or something).

And since pharmacists usually require the specific things learned while in the pharm program… I doubt normal science majors could go for pharm co-ops, although I’m sure they could try for research ones that happen to use drugs pharmacy students would be studying.

Anyone know when the application acknoledgement letters (or emails :)) arrive? I submitted everything 2 days ago and they downloaded it yesterday, but I haven’t heard back yet. Other schools sent me my login information to check the status almost immediately after I submitted. Is this possibly because the deadline isn’t until a few weeks from now?

it can take up to a week or more for some colleges to send you a confirmation email.

this was great! Thanks.
it deserves a bump ^_^

Bump Bump Bump

Are there any helpful threads on LGBT life? I heard that there was a big gay and lesbian community, but not a lot to back it up.

Are international students left with more limited selection of classes since their orientation is a couple days before class starts?

This could use a bump again :P

I’ve been wondering, what are the rules/laws with alcohol at Northeastern/in Boston? Obviously 21+, I know that and I will be turning 21 freshman year (school in Germany lasts one year longer and I had to repeat one year). But I mean like drinking on campus/in public. Only in your room/in bars?
In Germany the laws are pretty lax (drinking age is 16), and you can drink pretty much whenever, wherever and as much as you want, right out of the bottle and all. I have heard that there are some crazy rules about alcohol in some states, and just wanted to know what these are in MA. Thought it would be best to clarify that before I show up on campus and start to accidentally break the law and lose my scholarship because of that.

What do you think about the Pre-Med LLC? What are the kids like who are usually in this LLC? Thanks!

@ xnamelessx–Massachusetts has an “open container” law that states you can’t be drinking alcohol in any public place (like a park, on the sidewalk…) that isn’t licensed to serve alcohol. This is not always enforced, and you can get around it by pouring your alcohol into another container (a coffee to-go cup?), not that I am advocating this! (ex, our town has concerts on the common in the summer and some adults will mix cocktails and bring them in a thermos with paper cups. They would not bring a bottle of wine or a six pack of beer) You are also not allowed to have an open container in a car–even as a passenger.

you should search the NEU site for the specific campus policy–oh wait, here it is:

[Public Safety > Drug and Alcohol Policy](<a href=“Home - Northeastern University's Police Department”>Home - Northeastern University's Police Department)

not a very extensive list.

I can’t speak to campus events as my S is starting in the fall–but MA ge.n laws are pretty strict about alcohol- and it’s only recently that you can even buy alcohol on a Sunday! Blame all our Puritan roots!! :)

NEU is pretty strict. In dorms they’ll write you up and slam you with fines and alcohol classes, not to mention being on probation for a semester or a year.

In my opinion, it’s actually worse being 21. You’ll be with other freshmen, most of whom are less than 21. Meaning if you guys get caught and they check IDs- you could get hit with supplying alcohol to minors, which is a big deal.

Time for a bump?

Going to go ahead and bump this again…
