NEU FAQs Answered

Since I have some serious time to kill at work, and because I've been seeing a lot of questions being asked over and over again:

BU or NEU? Surely I'm the only person deciding between the two.

Perhaps I'll throw in Fin Aid/Cost and Housing later...

Very nice emily

I have a life I promise!!

Just a co-op job with excessive free time. :D

Looooove it! And one of my threads made the list… at least I wasn’t being too redundant ;)

this needs a bump :)

thanks emily… hadn’t seen this before, but its really helpful

Wow Emily thanks for the bump very informative…i laughed at the football comments lol

another bump since this has disappeared from the forum.

Thanks, Emily. We think my son could qualify for an excellent scholarship at NEU, so I was just about to dig into CC to look more about pros/cons. This was helpful.

Hey Emily. I was just wondering where you co-op? Also do you know some of the places that business majors co-op?

Thanks for all the links. They were really helpful.

I don’t know too much about business co-ops… I have a few friends who have gotten really incredible business co-ops (Goldman, Covidien, a few other big-name companies, as well as really cool international and out-of-state stuff) and some friends getting in to good graduate b-schools thanks to their co-op experience. It seems like the top students get excellent jobs, but I’ve also seen business majors get really screwed and wind up not doing anything interesting.

Like some of us have posted in the past, it comes down to having a decent GPA, but most importantly, having work experience. Having prior jobs will make your first co-op resume much stronger, since you’re competing with older students who already have experience. Basically the answer to “Where will I co-op” is that you might co-op somewhere awesome or you might be stuck somewhere that you hate. People end up in both positions, but the potential for a great job is there.

I’m a science major, so my experience isn’t really relevant to people looking at business co-ops. I work at a lab in a nearby hospital doing cell bio research, and lucked out (really really really lucked out) landing what is the dream job of essentially every kid looking to go into ph.d/grad school in science. I owe some serious thanks to NU for that one (although my massive tuition is thanks enough), but as far as how I got the job, it was due to A) luck, and B) coming in with related experience C) being a decent interviewee.

Thanks Emily. That was really helpful information. Do you know if Engineering students ever do co-op/research ?

Most engineers tend to pursue co-op jobs in industry (i.e. Raytheon, GE, iRobot, Draper Labs, etc). However, there are a bunch research centers and labs on campus that i know hire co-ops (i.e. CenSSIS, CAMMP, Center for High Rate Nanomanufacturing, etc.) I also know a few people who did research freshman year. So if you’re interested in research, the opportunities definitely exist… you just need to look for them.

thanks for answering my question.

time for a bump

Do you know anything about how strong the communications or cinema majors are?

bump for all the new posters that have been popping up since acceptances went out…

I’m going to bump this one again…

So Emily2007, what is oyur gut; When will we hear for EA this year?

I got my EA acceptance 5 years ago (I’m ancient) around the 16th-18, and I’m pretty sure that’s been the window every year since then. I would say it’s gonna be thursday around 5pm, but I don’t follow admissions at all so grain of salt ect.
