Can’t wait to hear about your visit to Tulane! We are going to Destination Tulane in March with S23.
I can’t speak to NEU but I have a Freshman D at Tulane, who is loving it. She is a tour guide and will be on a panel at Destination Tulane, so you might meet her
One of her professors just invited the class over to her house to view a Mardi Gras parade next month, only in Nola!!
So far it strikes me as a work hard, play hard school. My D is in the honors dorm and all her friends are serious students, who love to go out and have fun after the work is done. It seems to be a good balance. The opportunities to get involved early on are endless.
A warning about the dorms, they are not pretty!
We live in driving distance but D has no desire to ever come home on the weekends - too much going on on campus.
I only visited Tulane once when i was in New Orleans for a conference. The older academic buildings were gorgeous and some of the new ones were impressive too. But many of the residence halls were in no way compatible with the rest of the campus.
They are working on it though. A huge new dorm is almost finished, will open later this year and looks great. One of the really old dorms will be torn down then. Although I hear that some students see it as a bonding experience to stay in some of the older dorms. A connection formed through common misery My D is in a new dorm, so I’m not speaking from experience.
Will the new dorm house a lot of kids? Is it for freshmen?
Is dorm placement a lottery or first come first served?
hi!
My daughter got an invite to the Scholars program (I think that’s new this year). We are visiting Tulane for that March 20-21. Do you happen to know, or can you ask your daughter, if my daughter would be able to get that honors housing still?? (I think I prefer that for her but will let her decide if she winds up going there.) (She doesn’t drink or smoke but isn’t averse to those who do. LOVES good food so is excited for that down there.) TIA
There is a housing quad redevelopment project underway that will eliminate the old motel-looking dorms. Phase 1, containing two new dorms is nearly complete, opening this year. Ultimately five new dorms are part of this project and will significantly transform housing on campus.
The new dorms opening this year are replacing sophomore dorms, so they might not be for freshmen.
I’m not sure what is happening with the Honor’s program, they seem to keep changing it around. If she has a chance at honor’s housing (and hopefully they can tell you that by March), take it. It’s the newest dorm on campus (until the new ones open later this year). Those honor’s kids party too, though
ok, thanks! Yes. all college kids party. I did WAY too much. Oy. She’ll have fun, it’s just not her m.o.
A brief update from my D’s admitted student visit to Tulane (based on what I could extract from her).
My D was there 3 nights, 2 days. She stayed at her freshman cousin’s dorm room. The dorm room was a double and my D said that it was quite spacious with room for a separate mattress for her. We had read about the dorm rooms not being great but that did not seem to be a concern for my D. The new dorms being constructed will likely make this aspect even better.
She went out of campus on one night for a star wars chewbacca costume parade (!), went to a frat party on campus, and went out for several meals/coffee runs with her cousin and her friend group. Overall, she thought that the social scene was quite active. Her take on it was that there are quite a few social activities/parties (not just on weekends but also on earlier days of the week) and it would largely be up to her to moderate and balance her partying and academics. In general, she agreed with the overall perception of Tulane students being quite happy and social. But, she also thought that there was a lot of academic focus at least within her cousin’s friend group.
She spoke to several students about their decision to go to Tulane and found that several of them had chosen Tulane in lieu of some well-known colleges such as UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, Northeastern, etc. A common theme was that they were attracted to Tulane’s balance of academics + social life and that they did not want to be lost in large colleges. One person who chose Tulane over UCLA said that she found UCLA to be a bubble that students rarely stepped out of whereas Tulane actively encourages students to interact with the New Orleans community.
The Destination Tulane event itself was somewhat useful. They did a tour of the campus (which she had already done before she applied) and a rundown of academic life, social life, NOLA, etc. She met several other admitted students (a large group from MA) and found that to be useful.
My D commented that she did find a lack of diversity on campus.
Overall, she has not made a final decision between Northeastern and Tulane as yet but she did convince herself that she would be happy, be academically challenged, and have an active social life at Tulane.
has she decided yet?
This was helpful for me, thanks. Our D is heading there this fall.
