Neural Engineering

I'm pursuing a dual degree in computer and software engineering, but was wondering about the field of neural engineering. Would I be able to become a neural engineer with computer/software degrees? What type of additional education would I need? I know that neural engineers often have backgrounds in physics, electrical engineering, and things of the sort, which makes me wonder if I could go the same route.

Any additional information anyone can provide is greatly appreciated.

You might be able to get a masters...otherwise I would say you could get into the industry but may not be doing what you consider "neural" engineering. You will be doing software/computer engineering on devices for the industry.

That's not a bad second choice if I can't do any actual neural engineering. Thanks for your input.

Absolutely. But you probably need some grad work to be a competitive applicant for jobs. It is very common for neural engineers, computational/mathematical neuroscientists, and systems neuroscientists, to come from a variety of backgrounds, including CSE, but they also want you to have some actual neuro experience before you start working in the field.

Check out Caltech's Computation & Neural Systems department, Boston University's Cognitive & Neural Systems department, and the MIT Media Lab grad program (specifically the Boyden lab). I know that the latter two offer MS degrees, not just PhD (I forget whether Caltech does), and they will give you the background you need.
