Neuroscience Major

So can anyone tell me their experiences from this major. I want to major in this, but the website says don't major in this if you're going to medical school. They say take something else. How is this major and is there a lot of competition for this. Thanks.

I don't know why they would say to not take it. Most people who do neuroscience end up doing something health related after undergrad. What they probably mean by that is it can be fairly difficult compared to some of the majors at UVA, so it will require a lot more work to get a good GPA. It doesn't really matter what you major in when applying to medical school, so someone majoring in English or Politics will have more free time to pursue other interests than someone majoring in Neuroscience. Also, don't plan on absolutely majoring in it, because they only take a couple dozen students and if you don't make it you'll have to do something else.

I think it just means that it's not going to prepare you fully for the MCAT exam and that just doing neuroscience research will not be as good as doing comm service/interning in a hospital.

IMO it's a disclaimer so people can't complain about not getting into medschool. I'm sure that if you take the necessary cell/mammalian bio classes and do the intern/comm service stuff alongside the research it won't matter.

They want kids in the program who'll passionately contribute to the research being conducted on campus and possibly come back for a research/teaching position after a Ph.D, not kids who're just using it instead of a bio major for medschool... and won't take anything out of the major to their career.

But if you're interested in med and specifically the nervous system (like I am) then I think it would be fine for you.

I spoke to the man who runs the program, and he told me that they want to find students who are doing the research for the pure love of research, and not just as something to put on your resume.

You can major in it and go on to medicine, but you just shouldn't do it because you think it looks convenient, since it is such a research intensive major.
