Hi, new poster here (longtime visitor). S is senior @ a Colorado HS, 3.4ish GPA, just missed NMSF, 33 ACT. Excellent jazz trumpeter (all-state, etc). He’s going to apply to CU (which has the great Brad Goode teaching here) but also University of Nevada-Reno, USC Thornton, Northwestern, and Berkeley.
I’m trying to get an idea of comparative music department scholarships at these colleges. Anybody heard of full-tuition being awarded by music departments from these schools? I know Berkeley doesn’t usually give much merit aid; but, D, who goes to BU, said a friend who goes to Berkeley told her they’re short on trumpet players right now…
Thanks!
Do you mean Berleley as in CAL? Or do you mean Berklee as in the Boston school?
Is your kiddo a music major?
Three things:
- There is a music majors forum on CC...look under college majors on the main page, and post your query there.
- If your son is a music major, any scholarships he gets will be based on the strength of his audition at the school...not his ACT score or GPA. Additionally...it will be the strength of his audition relative to others who are auditioning for admission when he does. The top performance awards go to the top auditions.
- If your kiddo is not a music major, the likelihood of him receiving a full tuition scholarship from any music department is extremely small.
They could be short on trumpet players right now…but they could have a ton of outstanding students audition for next year. You don’t have any way to predict that.
If you are talking about Northwestern…music scholarships are highly competitive and are completely based in the audition. The brass department there is very strong…and draws excellent students. Same with Thornton
If you are talking bout Berlkee in Boston…don’t count on a full tuition award. The school doesn’t have that kind of endowment.
You can PM me if you would like. My kid was a trumpet performance major.
Whoops, meant “Berklee” in Boston. Auto-correct–aaargghhh!
Also check out University of Nevada - Las Vegas. They have a highly regarded jazz program.
