new 11" macbook air for comp sci major

Hi, I'm currently stuck in a debate on which computer i should buy for college. I am majoring in comp sci and I really like the new 11.6" mba. If I get it, I'll upgrade to 4GB ram, 256GB ssd, and a 1.8Ghz dual-core i7 (which has turbo boost up to 2.9Ghz) - do you think this will be powerful enough for comp sci? I love the portability factor this computer for walking around campus, and i'm really not too concerned about the screen size since i'll have a 23" monitor in my dorm for when i need it. Also, i'm not worried about the lack of a disk drive, i hardly use my disk drive now since you can just use a flash drive for everything.

i'm just not sure if i can reason the cost (the upgrades bring me to $1549 with edu discount) for the form factor when i can get a stronger mbp for cheaper.

i would go with the 13" and upgrade that. its still very portable and light. comp sci major needs power and air is not really aimed at that.

On an SSD, even a 386 is fast enough :-). For a couple years at least you’ll be fine. Then buy a Mac Mini for a Jr. year present to yourself and a KVM and you’re all set.

As much as I am not an Apple fan the MacBook Air is one awesome piece of engineering.

Check with the school first to make sure they’re not expecting some monster install for Comp Science 101 or some such.
