Father of the Boarder, I’d take BU (Boston Univ), Connecticut College, and Tufts off that long list. They are big reaches for 3.0-3.3 students. Elon, Gettysburg and Rensselear are also reach-ish.

Big shout out for Stonehill and Bryant though… both schools worth looking at for anyone who wants a New England mid-sized school.

Simmons College (Women’s College) in Boston gets high marks for its Nursing Program here in the New England area. They have gotten a bit more selective as of late.

I agree that Simmons should be on the list. D’s school has very good placement there (from Naviance.) Unfortunately she has made it quite clear that she doesn’t want single gender…:(

I don’t think I would take BU off the list. Tufts, yes, ConnColl, maybe.

Brandeis, Oberlin, Dickinson, and Reed are also quite reachy in this GPA range.

Tempmike, although SHU does, as you say, accept a lower % of applicants than SJU, SJU average GPA is 3.4 vs. 3.0 at SHU and the SATs are 1210 vs. 1200. In addition, of those accepted approximately 25% enroll at SJU vs. 17% at SHU. This suggests self-selection by applicants accounts for the differential you cite.

St Joe is between a dicey section of Philly and one of Philly’s affluent suburbs, with more of it nearer to the latter. The campus is attractive. South Orange, where Seton Hall is, is not a dangerous place, either.

St Joe is a Jesuit institution–I am not Catholic, but I know Jesuit institutions are regarded highly for their rigor, quality and commitment to public service. You can certainly get a quality education at many state schools, but I would not put down these schools, particularly St Joes.

Yikes! Father, did you have a prior post that I missed? What was your criteria? I can’t imagine anyone working from a list that large.

Not sure if you are interested in RI, but Salve Regina in Newport is well known for it’s nursing program. (and Newport is beautiful and fun)

nightchef, BU has a self-reported average hs GPA (class of 2013) of A-, with 76% of students in the top 15% of their class. It’s kind of notorious at our hs for the kids it turns down.

^Well, the collegedata scattergram for this year shows a fair number of kids getting in with 3.3s. It’s definitely gotten more selective, and I agree it’s a reach for a B/B+ student, but not the kind of extreme reach that warrants a “forget about it, it’s out of our league” kind of response.

^ Maybe BU just hates our HS for some reason, the only kids from our hs who get in there are in National Honor Society. Actually, S’07 and his friends figured out that of the kids they knew that applied to BU, the ones who took AP Calculus got in, and the ones that didn’t got denied.

Now if we just had Naviance maybe I could see a REAL pattern, lol.

Is it my imagination or was Loren Pope’s focus on these schools that students with GPA’s similiar to this thread could get into these schools? It seems to me that some of these schools are way out of reach: Beloit, Hampshire, Kalamazoo, Rhodes, Ursinus & Reed.

We have the book (somewhere) although it is an older edition & I just thought that now some of these CTCL’s are so “hot” that admission is very competitive.

What are some of your thoughts on this?

It seems to me that CTCL schools are not out of reach for 3.0-3.3 students, especially if the student is male or has pretty good ACT or SAT scores.

Regardling some of the CTCL colleges: In my opinion this is where all Bs are not created equal. I think the kids that are in the top 15-20% on standardized testing that are B students would be totally capable of doing the work at these schools and I do think these smaller schools can discern which students will be successful by looking holistically at their applications. The essay probably plays some importance in displaying some flash of intellectual capability that can differentiate.

I wonder about some of the more “selective” colleges reporting 3.3’s. Is it because they unweight the GPAs and some of those applicants really had 4.0’s and/or a boatload of APs or honor courses? Does it depend on the major the applicant may select? Do schools say hey this person is interested in Russian Studies - we don’t have enough of those we’ll admit a 3.3 ; but we have a ton of undecided so the cutoff is 3.6? Or would it apply to different divisions of the school, Humanities OK, but Science & Tech not OK? I’m sorry if this has been gone over - I’m new to this.

Look closely at how some of the average GPAs of admitted students are calculated. I read on CC that one school had a very strange way of calculating gpa and lots of extra points were packed onto an UW gpa (ie: 1.0 onto every honor class instead of .5, not sure what was added on for AP classes taken).

IMO, not all CTCL schools are equal. I think one might find admission less competitive at McDaniel College than at Reed College. I am not picking on either school. I just think that is how it is.

SATs and ACTs are going to be factors, being a male, as well as other diversity factors will play a role.

I don’t think CTCL colleges are necessarily supposed to be schools that are matches for B/B+ students, although a lot of them turn out to be. They’re just supposed to be schools that are under most people’s radar, but offer an educational experience that Pope believed was comparable or superior in quality to the schools that are on everybody’s radar. The CTCL website mentions “holistic admissions” as one of the criteria for selection, but that doesn’t necessarily mean a school can’t be highly selective.

From what I can see, the selectivity of the CTCL schools is all over the map. Of the ones you mentioned, SLUMOM, Reed is highly selective and probably not a realistic target for most of the students in this thread. But I don’t think that’s at all true of Beloit or Hampshire–both of which, according to the numbers at college board dot com, have first-year student bodies with over 30% <3.25 GPA. Rhodes, Ursinus and Kalamazoo are tougher, but only the latter and Reed have under 10% first-year students with a <3.25.

Well, summing up what I am reading on the back of the book, CTCL schools are schools that Pope thought were less well known, but were outdoing the Ivies and major universities in producing “winners”. CTCL schools do it not just with A students, but also with students who get Bs and Cs.

On that note, I wonder how many Cs you can have and still get into Reed?
