New 3.0 to 3.3 (GPA) Parents Thread

E-Town actually offers a standard 4 year B.S. in engineering, in addition to a 3/2 program.

[Course Catalog](<a href=“Elizabethtown College - Page Not Found”>Elizabethtown College - Page Not Found)

Edit: this is one of the main reasons it stood out for us.

Interesting food for thought. Thank you both for the info.

thanks warrior il check it

Re: getting the school to send transcripts. Our school requires the students to fill out a lengthy form, and it must be in the student’s handwriting. No typing, no parents filling out. So my son, with his chicken scratch handwriting, had to fill out a bunch of forms which were a royal pain. I see why the school wants the kids to do them, so that they “own” the process…but I’m not sure that this really makes a student own the process any more than if they could type them!

My son has really taken charge of this whole process (quite a shock). He spoke to our GC and she said to tell her when he had applied and then they would send out the package. they also just updated naviance to show this information. My son input 5 schools that he is applying to.

My list hopefully for now (i’m a junior)
I’ll have about a 3.1-3.25 GPA, and somewhere from 1800-2000 on SATs

Miami
NYU
Michigan (did very well junior year, considerably better than freshman year as a sophomore as well)
Delaware
uconn
syracuse
pittsburgh
Possibly university of washington
penn state
rutgers (in state)

Warriorboy - you must be very proud of your son for taking charge of the application process.

Warriorboy - lucky you. My S is just starting his applications. He will be very busy the next six weeks. How many schools are your son applying to?

eromano, I don’t see too many safeties in there. Have you checked the Naviance at your school to see the acceptance stats from last year’s grads? Most of the PSU students that I know had at least a 3.5 to go to Main campus and I believe that’s true for most of these big 10 schools.

Yes, eromano, we have some NJ residents on this thread & I think Rutgers has become quite competitive, from what I have read! You are a junior, so you have time to look around! Look back through some of our old posts, would you consider a small, private school?

S has submitted apps to a few rolling schools, but the apps aren’t complete because our high school takes sooooo long to send everything. He submitted the rather lengthy request form two weeks ago and must wait another week. I had heard that it’s a quicker turn around when you request early, but sadly, this doesn’t seem to be the case for his stuff. It’s stressful because of the rolling nature of the admissions for those schools.

ReadyToRoll, your school is similar to many, including our son’s HS. It is still early in the process bc of what you just described. Teachers are still writing those LORs!

RTR-Try to relax, I know it’s easier said than done. September and October are considered early in the app process even for rolling admit schools. If he gets everything in before November, his chances should be maximized. Most kids have not submitted one college app at this time. It’s only here at CC that the process is accelerated.

eromano: not to be a stickler for details, are you a junior or a senior…? You say you are a junior, but then you say that your junior year grades were significantly better than freshman or sophomore…

agree with others: you need another safety if you are a senior…if you’re a junior list is still alittle reachy but remains to be seen; Syracuse (if its a&s) should be a match…

S told me recently that a friend of his with lower grades (about a 2.9 GPA) and much lower SATs (each section in the 500s) went to a special “legacy interview” at Boston College and will be going there despite his stats because both parents went there (and I think grandparents) and are big contributors. I don’ t know anything about Boston College except that our Naviance says you need pretty good stats, but my son was a little bummed that he can’t have the connections that this kids does. (Of course, we don’t know if he really is in yet, but the kid told my son that it was definite. Is that even possible? Hmm…maybe they are buying a wing…lol…)

It may be a kid bragging, but certainly heavy contributors carry even more clout than usual in this economy. And since most of us would not be at all surprised if you changed “son of big contributors” to “star athlete”, “senator’s daughter” or “young movie actor” I can understand the college’s motivation.

It would be very interesting to see an expert study of just how much every hook (athlete; URM; legacy; political tie; geographic diversity; child of college employee; etc) can translate to in SATS and GPA at various schools.

methinks eromano does not realize that some parents are fairly computer savvy: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/boston-university/751429-chances.html</a> He’s a Junior and is projecting an upward trend for this year…

For transcripts, some schools including ours use Docufide - www.docufide.com. The transcript is sent electronically and much more quickly than when it is sent directly from our high school. You can also get a copy for yourself to verify the accuracy. Don’t sign up until you make sure your high school and college candidates are listed - https://securetranscript.docufide.com/order?screen=scr_order_chooserh</a>.</p>

Noted the S has a form to fill out and give to Guidance Dept, a Senior Profile form to put down all colleges he is applying to… Hmmm, wonder how long it will sit on his bureau? As his handwriting is pathetic, he will ask me to fill it out, for sure.

Yep, you caught me, i am projecting this year, but i have never really tried in school before and I feel a very strong year coming. I would really prefer a big school. Im a big sports fan and I’m in a graduating class of about 330 and I hate it. I hate everyone knowing everyone else. Really would like to switch to a large school for college.
