Hi all! My brother has been a permanent resident in U.S since 08/2010 as he just came from other country. He has also been accepted to community college this Fall 2011. If he didn't work for the year 2010 and did not file the tax return either, what is he going to put in the section of FALSA regarding about the tax information?

He will put “will not file” for the tax status and enter 0’s as appropriate for the dollar information. How did he live? Is he a dependent or independent student?

He is currently living with his parents now. Is he considered as independent or dependent even though he is single and almost 30 years old?

he’s independent. He’s over 24

If he is independent, it means that he can skip his parents’ tax info in the FALSA right? And is he going to get any aids as he did not work at all?

Just a quick correction: it’s called FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid.

yes it is FAFSA, Free Application for Federal Student Aid. Sorry for the mistyped

I think it’s likely he would qualify for some federal, and perhaps state, aid. He will probably have to enter the amount of untaxed income he received in the form of gifts and support (see FAFSA instructions for question 44j) from his parents and anyone else but students do have some income protection allowance. He should file his FAFSA and it will tell him whether he qualifies for a Pell grant and, if so, how much.

Should he skip all information about his parents as he is over 24 and independent?

He can skip all the parent questions…he may not even see them when he files as FAFSA used skip logic. Or it may ask him if he wants to enter the optional info. It won’t change his EFC either way.
