So as it was said in the article, Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson will join the string faculty of CIM!! Any thoughts on this?

The first thing that went through my mind is that Cleveland is a lot easier to get to (from other cities, I mean) than Bloomington. With Kantor leaving, there would have been a hole in CIM’s faculty. This is great news for Cleveland (hope that Mr. Laredo and Ms. Robinson have good snow boot.)

so is he leaving IU? In that case who is prospective teacher at IU?

IU has many violin instructors (probably more full-time ones than any other institution in North America), many of whom are excellent, so there would not necessarily be a need to replace Laredo at IU if he is leaving (and, of course, many of the best violin teachers teach at multiple institutions, so he might not be leaving).

I would imagine that Mr.Laredo will be at CIM full time-that’s what the position called for- since he will have a ready made, and substantial, studio to teach. Most of Paul Kantor’s students are not transferring out with him and audition time for the next freshman class is fast approaching.

I heard that many Kantor students are going to Rice with him…

I don’t think that is correct. I heard from students that are in his studio at CIM that only his top grad students and I believe one undergrad are transferring with him.

I know a couple of grad students that are transferring w/ him to Rice. It’s going to take an extra yr for them anyways!

“Many” students are not transferring with Mr. Kantor and as of right now, violoncello is correct. Some students have not yet made the decision.

Anyone have an update on how many students from CIM are transferring? My son auditioned on Friday for Paul Kantor’s studio as an undergrad at Rice. Just wondering about his chances. Anyone know how many openings?

Well, latest news has it that almost all of Kantor’s students chose to audition at Rice but some are not sure if they will really make the move to Texas- and those that would be seniors might not be as willing since it could impact graduation timing.
Even if a goodly number make the move with him, there would still be the usual amount of room for incoming freshmen. Good luck to your S!

According to a friend of mine who spoke to Paul on the subject: Virtually all of his students are applying to Rice, and the vast majority say they would transfer if they are accepted. Only a couple are undecided.

Not sure how that will affect your son’s chances at Rice.

I heard the exact same thing. Which is really a shame because some of my best friends were in his studio :(

The “undecideds” are some juniors who would probably not be able to graduate on time if they moved to Rice as seniors. Some of the course sequences don’t “match up” and that would necessitate taking an extra undergrad year- not everyone is willing to do that.
Just by numbers on a page, there should be room for some freshmen in the studio at Rice though.

The other thing is that he will probably have a smaller studio at Rice than at CIM; he could downsize by ten students still have a studio twice as big as the biggest at Rice!
