New Forbes college rankings: some surprises

soccersamdude11 - can you name a single academic dept. BC (or BU) is ranked higher than UT-Austin in? I’m genuinely curious since you seem to have some hidden data to back this up.

I’m not “trying.” I am being condescending. Anyone who supports this ranking deserves a good smack.

I made a perfectly legitimate, logical point that you’re completely ignoring. Who’s #1 on the “happiest students” list? How about #8? #14? #19? All great, academically strong schools that also rank well on USNWR. Where are those schools on the Forbes “ranking” (might as well call it “a randomly generated list”)? Ah. I see. Pretty much negates the whole “OMG It ranked colleges highly that have the total package!!” thing, doesn’t it? ;)

Hookem, just because the usual schools are not on this list does not mean it’s bad. A criteria was outlined and the schools that fit it best were then ranked, like any other lists. just because duke isn’t at the top doesn’t mean it’s bad, it’s just a different list than say US New or other ones.

and it is not a “happy person” list rofl

Apparently you didn’t get the “Let’s chill out, this is a pathetic thing to fight about” memo, hookem. :)

I don’t think it’s entirely based on the happiness of the students, otherwise I would have said “it’s entirely based on the happiness of the students.” I said I think it’s based on their overall experience with their college, including their general happiness, whether or not they liked their teachers, the town around them, and whether or not they came out a better person after their education.

I apologize that your school is not as highly ranked as you believe it should be. However I fail to see how that is reason for you to come on and be condescending towards the other members of this discussion. Relax, pal, relax. This is honestly nothing to get worked up about. . .

And, as I previously wrote, I do believe Forbes made some serious errors. But I stand by my statement that “best” is not = “academically best” in the case of this ranking system.

Oh, and for future reference (and I’m truly not trying to be condescending here), ending your posts with “AHAHAHAHAHAH ROFLMAO” sort of gives your posts a frantic, manic air to them, and it stresses me out a bit to be perfectly honest!

JWT: BC is simply overall a better institution than austin. Even looking at US News it is 34 vs 47.

If you remain skeptical go to collegeboard.com, compare stats (it’s becomes quite obvious which is better, academically speaking at least, when you do this), and get back to me…

so you’re saying that even though every academic program at Texas is ranked higher, and Texas has more distinguished faculty and greater resources, BC is simply better overall? huh?

Ah, see, jenx, you underestimate my ability to put any bias behind me and simply look at the facts. I’m actually more furious about the ranking of Brown, of all schools, then my own.

This isn’t about Duke (19th happiest students, legendary basketball, AND the 8th best academic university in the country). It’s about basic intelligence. sigh People with no common sense make me facepalm…

tsk tsk tsk soccersamdude reading comprehension, JWT asked for academic department. BC is a good school you are doing some serious damage to it.

^ haha, exactly. Again, FAIL.

btw, any list that has Centre and Kenyon in its top 100…much less top 25…should be burned.

Okay, hookem, I do see your point here. Their ranking of Brown was poorly done.

But, I am confused about your last post. Are you saying that I lack basic intelligence and common sense? I certainly hope not. I’d like to think of myself of an extremely intelligent and sensible person. :)

But if, for some bizarre reason, you are insulting my intelligence, I would like to take the high road and bring the conversation back to my original point. . .

This. Is. Nothing. To. Get. Emotional. About.

Okay, we all agree Forbes made some errors. Some people think more errors than others. Whatever. This is an utterly ridiculous subject to go internet screaming about! Let’s all get some rest and perhaps we will be less hostile in the morning hours.

BC is better in both education and nursing, and i would say tied in business although US news disagrees.

As far as more distinguished faculty and greater resources, I would like to see some evidence here…

And BC was also ranked MUCH higher for average starting and mid-career salaries.

-hookem go punch a pillow 10 times and you will be able to cope with these rankings and the exclusion of duke from the top 10.

makes some popcorn

@ jenx, I’m saying you’re acting like you lack both in this thread. I’m sure you have plenty of both; you just don’t seem to be using them at the moment  For instance, if their rankings of two colleges (take Brown and Duke) are miserably, disgustingly, woefully, pitifully inaccurate and idiotic, how can you logically, reasonably trust any of the rest of the list??!! Do they just get a couple of get-out-of-social science-hell-free cards? One or two “mulligans”?
“Oh, right…well, yeah, we sorta fudged those two up, but don’t worry; our methodology is fiiine.”

@ soccersam…sigh again, you fallaciously resort to ad hominem attacks by calling me angry, instead of actually addressing anything I said. Anything at all. You make me sad for the future of America.

UT AUSTIN: Acceptance: 44%

SAT Critical Reading: 540 - 660
SAT Math: 570 - 690
SAT Writing: 540 - 670
ACT Composite: 24 - 30

BC: Acceptance: 26%

SAT Critical Reading: 610 - 700
SAT Math: 640 - 730
SAT Writing: 620 - 710
ACT Composite: 28 - 32

Now I am no Sherlock Holmes but academically speaking the results seem pretty clear to me.

@ hookem…you randomly came in the thread and said WOW WORST RANKING EVER and gave no reasoning for that claim. Stop saying ad hominen and acting condescending. Not that i would expect less from a dookie. WOW IM SCARED FOR THE FUTURE OF AMERICA (i can say it too).

Ah, you think me saying “This is a dumb thing to fight about, let’s stop it” makes me look like I lack basic intelligence and common sense? Sigh Whatever you say. I’m not even going there.

But I will say that this is literally the stupidest thing I have ever seen anyone get worked up about. And this morning I watched 2 eleven year olds fight over which Spongebob episode was best. (Side note, ‘Band Geeks’ won)

I wish this site had more happy, clam fart-esque threads.

^ Soccersam, again, reading comprehension fail. It’s no wonder that you…nevermind.
Reread all of my posts. All of them. I make logical assertions in every one.

A typical hookem post:

GLLDFGMDFLGMDF! ROFLCOPTERMAO! I WIN U LOSE?!?!?!? EPIC FAILZOR.

Stop using ad hominem to fallaciously assert your claims.

(where is duke on the rankings).

DSFDSLDMF LOLZORCOPTER AHAHA IM GOD!

Fighting over how to properly conduct a scientific study and how to properly analyze said study is wrong? Ah. A lack of intellectual debate is what’s killing this country.

yes you are killing the country i would have to agree.

I swear, jenx, you’re all right. At least you sound intelligent. Misguided, but intelligent.

With soccersam, it’s like I’m talking to a …again, nevermind. Where do you go to school anyway? Some local community college that’s like #37 on the list?
