New Forum: Prep School Admissions

We've had plenty of interest in a Prep School Admissions forum, and discussion of this topic in other areas. Now, we've actually got a home for these conversations!

So, is a prep school a boarding school or just any private school?

It can be any private school that is college-prepatory.:)

isn't almost every high school college-prepatory?

What about admissions to public magnets?

"A university-preparatory school or college-preparatory school (usually abbreviated to preparatory school, college prep school, or prep school) is a private secondary school designed to prepare a student for higher education. Some schools will also include a junior, or elementary, school."

Being a member of a public magnet, I feel that those should be a part of this forum as well. A school doesn't have to be private to be top-scoring, from my observation. Find me a school with average SATs over over 1350 or 1400 (out of 1600) and I'll believe you.

There's plenty of boarding schools that have average SATs over 1350or 1400 iljets10

It's great that they have a new forum for prep schools. Why did they have to start it AFTER I finished my prep school admission? I remember posting on the prep school thread like every other day. I'm going to a boarding school in CT this fall.

there are just too many magnet public schools. i suspect this forum will be limited to mostly nationally known boarding schools, i.e. exeter, deerfield, st pauls, andover, choate, lawrencville, taft, hotchkiss, st georges, hill, groton, milton, etc. since admissions and student bodies at these schools are much like colleges.

everyone: this forum isn't knocking public magnets/private days. its just that those schools don't take kids from all across the nation. they are unlike the elite prep schools, which are open for admission from anyone across the nation wishing to get a great education. what use would local schools forum be?

There are also boarding schools/prep schools with lowish average SAT scores(by the standards purported on this board)----Avon Old Farms, Winchendon, Williston-Northhamptom, Northfield Mt Hermon, Governor Dummer Academy

These are very good schools for the right student. Private schools are often about what environment is the best overall fit for a student, one that will help him/her acheive to his/her fullest potential in all realms--socially, academically, athletically, in the arts.

Sometimes it seems that all high schools are college-prep. But -- aren't there still lots of high schools across the country with a business prep program, a vo-ag program etc?

In my area, most of that more technical high school coursework has been removed to a (duh!) technical high school, and now the vocational ag programs have been regionalized.

The reason why I feel public magnets are on par with prep schools is the simple fact that people do not have to pay for them. They are solely based on academic ability.

If someone can get me a list of schools with average SAT scorse of 1350+, I would greatly appreciate it, as I'd like to see how many there really are. There are 3 public Magnets in New Jersey alone x 50 states = 150. Plus the fact that NJ is a small state.

http://www.boardingschoolreview.com/highest_sat_scores.php

Those are boarding schools with average SAT scores of 1350 and above.

my high school is college prep. but alot of the kids arent as smart as you may think. I think it's because we're a private school and we do look beyond just smarts, but some kids are just there cuz there parents are paying that 17,000 every yr. That what it seems to me. Fo rthe most part, our grads go to top schools though, despite the laziness from some of the richer kids who plan to go to mediocre schools, come back home, and take over their father's business.

it's not an argument about if public magnets are as good as prep schools. it's the fact that public magnets are still just local public schools that don't accept applications nationwide like the preps.

exeter reported a record number of applications this year

applications nationwide like the preps.

worldwide. :)

So that's 12 schools nationwide that have SATs around where 3 public magnet schools in my small state alone are.

I personally think looking at average SAT scores is very misleading. Some schools have a large number of internationals/ESL kids. These kids sometimes have much lower SATs-espec in verbal. I would caution anyone to look beyond this statistic in finding the right fit.
