The letter of deferral says "you should feel free to send us any new information that may help us in our evaluation." But what exactly would this new information be? At my school, almost all academic awards and whatnot are given out at the end of the year. What are some examples of "new information" or accolades that you could send in midway through the year, to push them towards a positive decision?

Higher SATs. A prestigious award eg Science Olympiad…a new hobby, another community service… In general inform them about anything positive that happened/will happen the following months…
Another thing is an additional essay… I’ve heard that some applicants send another essay that mainly shows their passion or their interest in the college… some say it can boost ones chances…but take this with a grain of salt…u can look it up further…
Good Luck :-)

By Science Olympiad, do you mean the club Science Olympiads where you’re on a team, or specific science olympiads like IChO and USABO?

I think it’s pretty much anything you do that you would have included on your original application if it had happened. That include performing in a play or some other production, winning awards, getting a job, taking on a leadership position, and certainly you mid year grades. I think I said this elsewhere but Son actually added another rec since his two original recs were from history and English teachers (and he had decided sometime around early december after those had been written, that he was definitely majoring in science.

^^^Agree, DS got off the waiting list 2 years ago with:1)short letter reiterating Midd as his dream school and why,2) letter of rec sent from a professor at another college who had worked with him in local politics describing his passion, commitment and maturity, 3)his NYS award winning editorials from his school paper(had only sent one originally); all the pieces contributed to his assertion that his interest in politics and writing would make him an asset to the Midd student body…So I think you should send whatever ADDs in a coherent way to your case. He also called and spoke to his rep to make sure his material had been received.

Well, it’s pretty much everything…and try to remember if you forgot something on your original app… I had forgot to mention a prestigious award from the minister of education (I decided to leave it for the end…and just slipped my mind)…so be careful…maybe there are things that you forgot to mention in the first place, but you forget…
GOOD LUCK…Can’t wait to see all of you guys at Vermont… :-)
