I am used to having to Google who the “celebrities” are on Dancing with the Stars. I never thought I would need to do it for Jeopardy! guest hosts.
I thought he had one of the best first day’s of any of the guest hosts (other than Jennings and Richards). I suspect that there are some people here who thought he was just “meh.”
I can’t remember whether I wrote on here about my son’s strong opinions on what makes a good Jeopardy host. This son, who has a background in broadcasting, thinks the best host will be one who realizes his/her personality is secondary to the game, which is why he thinks the eventual replacement will come from a radio/TV background. The host should have personality, of course, but not be too over the top and make it about him/herself. We’ve been tuning into the show for decades because we love the show and knowledge, not because of a personality (truthfully, sometimes Alec ticked me off).
David Faber? Doesn’t anyone else here watch Squawk on the Street?
Which OTT platform is that on?
To me that is a good thing. The permanent host should not be a universally known person who may make the show all about him/her.
Over the Christmas break, Jeopardy! showed some of the original Alex episode in the early '80. In those early days, no question that Alex was a quiz show host (or in the language of Lou Grant talking to Ted Baxter, a “Quiz Master”). He was jovial and used way too many words talking about the categories, the backgrounds, etc. He definitely changed over the years.
I think whoever they select will also develop a style of his/her own. Right now they are all trying to be like Alex.
Mike Richards??? I confess I did not watch every guest host but this seems crazy!! I wonder how the true Jeopardy-lovers here feel.
NOT the Mike Richards who played Kramer on Seinfeld!!! The executive producer of both Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.
I knew that but it seems strange to me…an executive producer.
I think David Faber is doing well, certainly better than others, at least to me. The current guy, Matt, is growing on me some, but I’m having trouble figuring out why the contestants he’s been facing in general don’t seem competitive. He is a VERY smart guy and has the advantage of having done this a few times now but just surprised that nobody lately seems to even be putting up a fight!
That article notes:
Matt today lost more money in Final Jeopardy than most Jeopardy champions win each game. Would have ended up with $80k had he gotten the question right.
I thought Matt made a very weird wager at the end He could have still made tons of money regardless of whether or not he got the answer correctly had he not bet so much.
I think he was trying to break $80,000 for the day which might have been the largest non-James single day total.
Sometimes ego, competition, and celebrity get in the way of common sense.
I would imagine that he thought he would do well on a Declaration of Independence question so bet big.
My mother got it correct. She lived near Philly for a few years and knew there was a large German population going back to 1776.
Mike Richards was actually very good as the host.
