Joe Buck could have knocked it out of the park tonight but there will be some that just don’t like him!
I think Joe did a good job. But at this point, I am ready to move past the guest hosts and settle in with a permanent host. I think several of the guest hosts would be fine.
Its interesting that Matt has done well with different hosts. Champs always talk about how its an advantage to be a returning contestant because you have the knack of the signaling button. New contestants have to learn that. I would think that the cadence of the host is also an advantage in terms of timing. But that hasn’t been as true with Matt with multiple hosts during his run on the show.
As I wrote months ago, I’m not a Joe Buck hater like some, but he made it a little too much about him.
This article appeared in the Boston Globe today. The following quote is the author’s opinion of LeVar Burton’s stint as host. Did he even watch that week?
As the ‘Jeopardy!’ host search comes to an end, here are our top 5 and bottom 5 picks - The Boston Globe
“I was nervous about his run because the hype was so huge, but he crushed it: pitch-perfect at the podium, avuncular and gracious with the mid-show interviews. Plus, he’d bring in a whole new audience with his massive fan base.”
I have seen a couple pieces saying that LeVar did very well. I think he was one of the worst guest hosts. And he didn’t get better as the week moved on.
I think some people had favs at the outset and were going to see nothing but good in their job as guest host. And on the flip side, I think some people came in disliking given guest hosts before their first show and viewed their time as guest host through that tainted lens.
BINGO, @TomSrOfBoston — as much as Burton’s fan base WANTED him to do well, he clearly did not. Too slow to acknowledge right/wrong answers, and relied too much on his note cards, I think.
There was one comment to the article that made me chuckle, that Burton spoke the way you say “good job!” to a 2-year old!!
He put both LeVar Burton and Bill Whitaker in his top 5. They were both toward the bottom for me, along with Dr. Oz and Katie Couric. And he put Joe Buck toward the bottom and I think he’s doing fine. Everyone is entitled to their opinion , of course!
My issue with Dr. Oz is that a show that is based on competence and truth and actually PUNISHES you for being wrong should not have a host who spreads wacky medical disinformation as its host.
Hated Buzzy as a contestant, loved him as a host. He did the Tournament of Champions because he was able to HANDLE the best and fastest players. Someone like Holhauser would eat Burton alive (yeah, I know he wasn’t in this year’s TOC).
Like a lot of parents who grew up with Reading Rainbow, my family is one that wanted LeVar to do well. We were extremely disappointed. (Buck is dong a great job, IMO.)
Some are saying Jeopardy will have 2 hosts. Richards as host of syndicated show. Bialik as host of primetime and spin-off specials (Jeopardy-National College Championship).
Those were my two favorites!! In an earlier post I wondered if they might split up the hosting (to try to get some diversity). I hope it is true!
I could live with that.
So they are going to milk the franchise by having a prime time version. Maybe they will have a Bachelor/Bachelorette Jeopardy spinoff.
I think there is a fine line in terms of milking the franchise. Did they do that with the GOAT tournament? Or with the Jeopardy All-Stars tournament? Decade tournaments?
I think if they do a limited number of spinoffs/specials (always a balance there) that are still at the Jeopardy standard (NBC’s College Bowl is not), it can be fine. But always a risk of ruining the franchise by overexposing it.
That horse had already left the barn, and did so while Alex was alive.
ABC has yet to meet a gameshow they didn’t like to maximize (or overexpose depending on your PoV).
Jeopardy has made it official:
I’m really glad Mayim Bialek was chosen. She was my favorite by far.
James had multiple tweets this week about Jeopardy:
Today: Also new for next season: contestants can submit two Final Jeopardy responses in case the first one causes public backlash
On Monday: Jeopardy says whoever hosts full time will have to quit their other job, so I’m crossing my fingers it’s Joe Buck
Yesterday: Jeopardy guest hosts, ranked*:
- Aaron Rodgers
- Joe Buck . . .
Last. Ken Jennings
*rankings based on how I would feel about them quitting their current job
Ouch!
I think the Jeopardy people burned a lot of bridges with their faux guest host/tryouts.
Will Mayim have to stop advertising phoney-baloney supplements?
The only thing worse than Joe Buck would be a tag team of him and Troy Aikman
