Thanks for reminding me to verify my DVR is recording the college tournament. It wasn’t. Had to add it. Not sure about adding Peacock for the olympics. Would allow watching sports I am interested in rather just the ones the US is good at.
For those who have Comcast cable, Peacock Plus is free.
Any word on the format? I don’t see how they get from 36 to 1 in 18 games (unless they do something radical like have 4-person matches).
LOL Tried to do that same math too. 4 contestant matches would be something we haven’t seen before. Not sure that is what they meant when they said that but who knows because they haven’t provided details. Jeopardy Fan today noted that there is conflicting info online about the tournament and no official format announcement. Seems like an odd missed opportunity in terms of marketing/promotion.
Saw a statement today from Amy that she supports Ken as permanent host. Interesting that was released as Mayim was back hosting on today’s show. Something like 125-130 shows left in the season from what I understand. Takes them to the sometime in the summer.
Ken just seems much more natural up there hosting than Mayim does. I can’t put my finger on it but somehow she gives off an uncomfortable vibe. give him the job already and let’s be done with it.
hard to believe Amy lost- everyone since her has been quite unimpressive. been leaving lots of questions on the board. today’s trio was particularly bland.
All because of Bangladesh. But, something’s going to take down even the best players eventually!
Amy, like Ken, was leading going into Final Jeopardy but got the final wrong. Matt and James were behind going into Final Jeopardy. James got final right but didn’t matter because Emma did too. Matt didn’t though it didn’t matter because Jonathan got it right as well. Easier to go with what ifs with Amy and Ken because had they gotten their respective final correct, their streak would have continued.
Official statements have been that Ken and Mayim will split hosting duties for the rest of the season. Don’t expect them to announce a permanent host until after this season is over. Ken seemed to get more comfortable hosting has he went along. I think there is definitely a benefit to having the same host over an extended period of time. They get more comfortable and you get more used to watching them.
Thought it was interesting that Amy said in an interview that she kind of lost steam after beating Matt’s record when Ken’s streak would have required pretty much double the wins she already had. It is too bad that the person that beat her, and who seemed to be both knowledgeable and quick on the buzzer went on to lose the next day.
Giant killers (people who defeat 10+ day winners) have historically lost the next game. Emma (who beat James) won three games. Jonathan (who beat Matt) won 11 games (only giant killer who went on to become a giant). All the rest (10 of them) lost the next game.
I have spectrum cable and they offered me a free year of peacock.
As I’ve posted before, I believe that some of these long term winners get tired and want their normal lives back. I still find it hard to believe that Amy didn’t know “Bangladesh”.
So she knew the answer but missed it on purpose to be done with the show? Did Ken know H&R Block?
Maybe.
No way we can know for sure. But it seems more likely (at least to me) there is fatigue of being on the show and challenge of maintaining mental toughness/alertness for an extended period of time than it was she knew the correct answer (which would have won her the game) but intentionally missed it to bow out. Her last show aired on a Wed meaning she didn’t have to come back another day to tape; just stay around for another show. Maybe a whole 'nother hour.
We look at being on the show for 41 games over 2 months. But they were taped over 9 days. I think they tape 2 or 3 days a week so it was a number of weeks. But its not like she was away from friends and family and routine for 2 months.
Amy started off in James territory in terms of getting FJ right her first 2 weeks or so of aired shows. The last couple of weeks of aired shows she struggled though. Didn’t matter because she had runaway games (until she didn’t). Could be she was trying to bow out but didn’t get a chance (until she did). Though she could have pulled back slightly, been beaten to the buzzer and not had runaway games and been home sooner. But also could be she just regressed more to the norm. She ended up between Matt and Ken in terms of FJ correct percentages (and about 25 percentage points behind James).
Ken has said that he wouldn’t have gotten his FJ question right even with more time because he was thinking holidays based on the wording of the clue not tax season. Maybe he is making that up and he just wanted his time on the show to end. Can’t be sure. With Bangladesh as I noted, I think that is one that many people would have gotten with time. But on the stage under the bright lights with a time limit, I can see someone not being able to come up with the answer that given more time they would have answered correctly. Though again, I don’t know for sure she didn’t know the answer and just tanked it to go home.
Reading some of the posts over the months of this thread, you could get a sense that Jeopardy picks contestants from the studio audience at random like the Price is Right (but I understand that isn’t even true of that show). Or they go to a street corner somewhere in LA 15 minutes before they start taping and ask people walking by if they want to be on a game show. There is a multiple level competitive process to be on the show. And there can be very fine differences that turn a win into a loss. Split second quicker or slower on buzzer means you don’t get a shot to answer. Finding daily doubles (your chances are higher if you answer more questions correctly but there still is luck involved). Categories/questions that go in your favor/against you. Going up against a great champion can make you look worse.
And then there are the words of Amy herself:
Once she lost, Schneider had a brief “really great” talk with Jennings. She stayed on the set for a couple reshoots, remaining as cheerful as possible, and when she left the stage, she went into the bathroom and cried.
“Playing ‘Jeopardy!’ is the most fun I’ve ever had, and I really didn’t want it to stop,” she said. “'Devastating’ is too strong a word, but it was pretty disappointing.”
A couple minutes later, Schneider composed herself, and was grateful to the contestant coordinator who reassured her that it was normal to feel such intense emotions. “It’s just like the last day of a show,” the coordinator said, appealing to Schneider’s theater roots. “You and this group of people have been busting your ass to create this thing together, and then all of a sudden, it’s just done, and it’s gone.” Schneider was comforted as she reminded herself that when she thinks about her shows, she never dwells on the end, but on all the great memories that were created.
I’m glad that Amy’s loss either hadn’t leaked or I missed hearing about it. I was annoyed that I knew about James losing before it happened.
There were a few. On the tournament of champions or superchamps who competed in teams, there were a few women. There is a women from Chicago who was a champ for 11? games. There was a woman champ who died shortly after her run. And there have been a few college champs who are women.
What is “obsolete terminology”?
A preferred phrasing is “assigned male at birth.”
Julia Collins won 20 games (5th longest). Until James (2019), that was second longest streak of all time.
Amy’s loss did leak out earlier than I thought it would. For some reason, I thought the results
of games weren’t supposed to be revealed until 8 pm EST on the day the show was broadcast. I checked in here right before that and realized Amy had lost. My bad for checking! Apparently, the info was already out there. But, I was disappointed to not see it unfold live.
