In some markets Jeopardy comes on first and Wheel follows.
Jeopardy airs at different times in different markets. Once it has aired in any of those markets, there is a chance the results can be leaked. Jeopardy Fan (the site I have linked several times) typically has results up on its site by about 1:30 pm eastern each day. I have noted that the site is to be avoided if you want to avoid spoilers.
Back during James’ run, I think the earliest airing was a couple hours earlier than it is today. So there was more of a delta (compared to when the show airs for most of the country) for leaks.
Studio audience also knows the results when the shows are taped. I understand that the audience isn’t required to sign anything or otherwise agree not to disclose results but historically that hasn’t really happened.
With James there was a screen shot of Final Jeopardy that was around the internet showing his loss that circulated prior to the airing of the show in majority of the country. If I remember right, James had already lost by the time his first show aired. Matt’s streak straddled two seasons so he had a time when he was known publicly as a long time champ before shows from the next season were taped. I think Amy’s run was over (in terms of taping) before her first show aired.
This article lists air times for different markets (back in 2014). But does show markets that air Jeopardy first or Wheel first. Montgomery, Alabama aired Jeopardy at 9:30am back when James was on.

And I understand that Jeopardy is on in Chicago at 3:30 pm central.
@marlowe1 , surely you are kidding.
OK, please move on.
Some details on the college tournament:
36 contestants. 12 quarterfinal games over the first 6 hour long shows. 12 winners advance to semifinals. 4 quarterfinal games over the next 2 hour long shows. Of those 4 quarterfinal winners, the 3 with the highest scores will advance to the 2 game final (the last hour long show).
So no wildcards. Get seeded against a really tough contestant and you could be out. And the math of starting with 36 and getting to a champ in 18 games requires one quarterfinal winner not to be in the final. Don’t think they have had a tournament that had a game winner not advancing to the next round.
Good to finally have details on the tournament. There have been more ads/previews recently but nothing on the format itself.
And in addition to the format, the link above also lists contestant names and colleges.
The Jeopardy!fan site posts after the first airing, which is at like 9:30 am EST somewhere in Mississippi.
Thems the breaks with syndicated tv. Don’t bet on the roses on the bachelor either, as someone always knows the results before they air.
any comments on Mayim forgetting to tell the contestant that they could bet up to $2k in Double Jep even if they had less than that? (Pretty bad that the contestant had to ask.)
wrt the leak, Amy’s loss showed up on the mid-pm news feed (Pacific Time).
The ad I saw tonight was talking about brackets so I assumed they were doing a single elimination thing like the basketball tournament.
Thanks for the link @saillakeerie ! There is a college student listed who lives in the town I live in (I recognize the name ). Looking forward to seeing this and rooting for her!
That’s cool , @FallGirl . I was happy to see two contestants from our public instate schools on the list .The one you mentioned from William & Mary and another young woman from Burke, VA who is at the University of Virginia (alma mater of one of my kids). Good luck to both of them! Should be a fun tournament.
I was thinking about brackets as well when I saw the ads. Was looking at four 9-person brackets (effectively what they are doing) or three 12-person brackets. 3 brackets would feed well into a 3 person final. But it was tough to work out the numbers in terms of having a total of 18 games. With four 9-person brackets, one of the people who would otherwise be in the final four will not move forward. That was the math I didn’t consider. And at one point I was looking at 4 person games as someone noted above.
Seems odd to me that you would do what you had to do in all of your games (winning them all) but not move forward. Could create some interesting betting situations. In the traditional tournament with 4 wildcards, people with $12-15k are safe to get a wildcard spot. And contestants bet accordingly. Here you could need to bet big in a runaway game to advance (and you won’t know that at the time). And in daily doubles in the semifinal (but not in the quarterfinals) there will be incentives to bet big outside the context of the game you are in.
Type of drama that someone pages above in this thread should like. To me its artificial.
But definitely looking forward to the tournament.
There have been people critical of Mayim for not reminding contestants that they can bet up to the highest clue dollar value on the board (if they have less than that amount). Ken always does (as did Alex). She has done it more this week than she did in prior shows (but she pretty much never did it previously).
Jeopardy Fan has the contestants for each show and the final jeopardy question and answer in mid-morning each day. Final results of the show itself are not on that site until about 1:30 pm.
Yeah, I also don’t like not have all semi-final winners automatically advance. And I will miss the WC.
How come when Ken hosts the show they announce him as “hosting Jeopardy, Ken Jennings”, but when Mayim hosts, they say “the host of Jeopardy, Mayim Bialik”? One sounds temporary and the other sounds permanent. If they’re sharing the hosting duties, you’d think there would be no difference in the way they’re presented.
Because Mayim had already been announced as a host, while Ken, for now, is just filling in while they figure out the long-term situation post-Mike Richards.
ken is better than Mayim. she’s kind of boring, she just smiles and says right or sorry. he is witty and more entertaining.
Agree, but the question is whether Ken even wants to be a permanent host, with Mayim doing the special tourneys. Ken has other things going on professionally, and perhaps he wants to continue with those? (Not to mention that Ken does not add any diversity to TV.)
I am not a regular viewer, but have caught both Ken and Mayim as hosts. To me, Mayim seems like she’s an actress playing a game show host, if that makes sense.
I always liked Mayim and have grown to like Ken as well. I’d be fine if they continue to split hosting duties. This way both can continue to pursue some outside interests/work. (After all no one person can replace Alex Trebek.)
They repeated this tonight!
