I like Mattea. I love her humor and how she talks to Ken. She has had some close games but I think she has a wealth of knowledge especially for her age. Her fashion choices I do question. I said to my husband maybe she went to the thrift store when she kept on winning.
Mattea really showed her chops tonight on the final clue of Double Jeopardy, which was the 2nd daily double. She was a few thousand shy of having more than double the second place money. She did a VERY quick mental calculation and bet what she would need to make the game a runaway. Of course, the finished the move by correctly responding!
Mattea knows how to bet. She has made the correct bet in each of her Final Jeopardy responses (though some were runaways so it was simple). Tonight she did make the right bet on the final Double Jeopardy clue to create a runaway game. Had she been wrong she still would have been in the lead going into Final Jeopardy. Though there was some luck there as well given the question before that final Double Jeopardy clue was a triple stumper. Mattea had control of the board based on the prior clue. Had another contestant gotten that triple stumper or had the Double Jeopardy clue not been the last one on the board, Mattea likely would have lost the game (assuming everyone made the right bets on Final Jeopardy).
Tonight was certainly interesting!
Never saw a final Jeopardy like that before.
Me neither @TomSrOfBoston . My husband said he figures it’s happened before a few times over the years. I hope someone researches that !
Can also have no winner. 3 new contestants the following game.
I remember an episode a few years ago where the new champion won with $500. The other two had bet everything. He got less than the second runner up! he lost the next day.
How about a win with $1 (not a win BY $1)? Happened in 1993. First game won with $1. Came back the next day and won $13,000. Two time champ.
Within the last couple of years, wasn’t there a game where the winner won with $1, and the other two had zero dollars? I remember the evening news on the station that carries Jeopardy in our area hyping it.
From the youtube clips, it happened in 2017 and 1993. On the 2017 show, 2 contestants were tied with $12,300 going into Final. 3rd place had $1,000. All 3 contestants missed the Final. First 2 risked everything and were left with $0. Third place contestant risked $999 and was left with $1.
In 1993, first place going into Final had $8,201. Second place had $8,200. Both bet $8,200. All 3 got response wrong. Third place going into Final had $2,200 and bet it all. That was the wrong bet. Should have bet at most $2,198. Had she done that, she would have won with $2.
Mattea has had some decent competition in some of her games but is still going strong. It will be interesting to see how long she goes.
Mattea is tied for 5th (with Julia Collins) for most regular season wins at 20. One more win leaves her trailing just James, Matt, Amy and Ken. Then would need 11 more wins to catch James. She is currently in 6th place for regular season winnings (almost $477k) with $532.5k next to catch. Then a big gap to reach Amy in winnings. Will see how long her run continues.
She bets conservatively with Daily Doubles. Even notes that herself. Hasn’t accumulated as much $$ on them as Amy and Matt did. Will be interesting how she plays in the tournament of champions. Also interesting that she talks often between questions/responses.
The past several games have been so exciting. Go Mattea!
Mattea does not seem as “invincible” as Amy. But she too will eventually meet her Bangladesh!
Or her H&R Block (ala Ken).
Mattea is obviously a very strong player but she does not seem to be dominating the way Matt or Amy have recently. I’ve been struck in some of the games recently where none of the three contestants are getting the answer. Just tonight, for instance, nobody could get the Dylan question or the dog question. Not that hard.
and last night I got 3 that none of them got (one was Posse Comitatus, don’t remember the others). She can be beaten.
