New Jeopardy host preference? / Jeopardy updates

I figured you would.

I got it wrong. :sob:

We Mainers get defensive when people assume we’re talking about Oregon when we mention Portland. We say, “We were here first!”

I knew Portland, OR too. Once again, geography stumped all of them!

I don’t think Diana Ross will be pleased to learn that some think she’s 90.

Well, at least that’s better than 95! Two people guessed Diana Ross- in 2021, what 95 year old released an album of new material?

I forgot about that. And I even commented on it (as did you) at the time:

I thought it was funny he didn’t know about the 78 records. I remember my mom talking about them. She had a bunch of old records but she must have thrown them out at some point.

25-30 years ago that question would have been higher on the board (lower dollar value). But its one of those things that mostly just us “oldsters” remember. Record? What is that? LOL

There are many questions like that, no-brainers to us, that nobody gets it right, I shake my head and say “they are WAY too young!”

Of course, sometimes when the categories refers to rap artists or current actors, I shake my head and say “I’m too old”!

Without question. Difficulty of any given category or any given question in a category is often based on age. I draw total blanks on much of the pop culture stuff. Even after the answer is revealed.

I’m not sure either of my kids would have any idea what 78 records are.

Although I often joke when a user says something by responding “what’s a TV” or "“what’s a payphone,” I do in fact know what those things are. At 25, I suspect I’m closer in age ro some users’ children than the users themselves, and I know what a 78 is. I don’t even think my grandparents owned any and they still have 45’s and LP’s. I just assumed knowing about 78’s was general knowledge one picks up along the way.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but did the challenger on Tuesday’s show blow it? He had 10K and the champ had 20K. Challenger got Final Jeopardy correct, but only bet about 4K or so. Champ was incorrect, and bet only $1, ending up with $19,999. If the challenger had bet it all, he would have won the game with $20,000, winning by a dollar.

Maybe he is math-challenged??

He knew the leader going into Final Jeopardy would be either bet $0 (assuring no worse than a tie) or $1 (assuring a win if the leader got FJ right). So the contestant in second needed to get to $20k to have the best chance of winning. Betting less than that would in no scenario lead to a win for the second place contestant. So it was a bad bet.

Overall though, I think the contestants this season have following the accepted betting guidelines (aimed at maximizing chance of winning) more often than they have in past seasons. Just like the thought is more candidates are preparing more for the show (in part because they had more time due to Covid), I think they are also studying the betting guidelines more as well leading to better FJ bets (and more $1 or $2 wins).

I thought they both screwed up. The champ bet the $1 to eek it out, but if that’s the case why not bet a real bet of several thousand? Why win by a dollar when you can make some money with a correct answer? Yes, the second place guy should have bet it all to have a chance. Again, why bet $3000 when all that’s going to do it get you second place?

You are looking at maximizing chances for a win in as many possible scenarios as possible. Contestant in second place often doesn’t bet everything. Risking more than $1 as the person in the lead is less protective of that possibility. And you have to look at everyone getting FJ wrong and you getting it wrong and other contestant(s) getting it right.

Had 1st place bet more than $7k, he would have lost. Maybe you say, bet $5k then. But had 2d place bet more than $5k instead of $3k, 1st place would have lost by betting $5k. You want to win money but only 1st place gets to keep what they have and more importantly, come back the next show.

What a game. Ken Jennings back and then a tie break!

Erica (contestant in the lead going into Final Jeopardy) didn’t make a cover bet. If you are in the lead going into FJ, you have to bet enough such that if you get the final right, you win no matter what. However other way I may lose, I wouldn’t ever want to get FJ right but lose the game in that situation. Yesterday the cover bet for Erica was $6,001 but she only bet $4,001. Second place bet to cover third place (and thus not a max bet). Max bet by second place means Erica loses without the tiebreaker.

Ken is hosting this week and next week which are the last 2 weeks of the regular season.

The decision about the permanent host should be out soon. I read that there might be multiple permanent hosts. I hope not.
