New Mexico Tech's low retention rate

It seems NMT has a retention rate around 70%, which is pretty low. Does anyone have any insight into this statistic? DS is considering going there but I wonder what he would be getting into. Thanks.

That may reflect the minimal selection of majors other than science and engineering for the students who have difficulty with science and engineering courses to switch into.

Also, Socorro, N.M. is small, isolated and not a place for everyone.

I agree with UCB. Many students start out in STEM majors and find that the classes are too difficult for them. When they change to majors to something in the liberal arts or whatever, they probably change schools.

Also, publics often have a lower retention rate simply because they often can’t offer the aid needed. So, even some who will stay in STEM majors, may leave after the first year or semester because of money issues, continue at a CC, then return to a univ at some point for their degree.

By comparison with most public universities, this retention rate looks like Harvard’s. Truly 70% is excellent for a public university! I would not worry about that at all!

Thank you for your responses. These make a lot of sense, and I won’t be so concerned. CC is the best!
