I am all for it. Too many posters jump to that conclusion I just ignore inflammatory posts unless I feel like getting a bit singed Sometimes, even though the poster might well be lying about some things, exaggerating, etc, etc (and our experienced sleuths here often out them from prior posts), I try to answer the question presented without going into whether it is truly the poster’s situation. Sometimes some good core issues arise from such inquiries, and so I don’t really care if it’s just a fishing expedition or “what if” post or even if the poster is playing with us. I’ve learned some good info from such posts that get into the nuances of how fin aid and how things work in college admit world. If it goes too far, I’m out and it’s up to the forum moderator to make a decision whether that poster should be reprimanded or removed.
There are some threads out there right now where I simply do not participate because I don’t think anything I have to say is useful or I just don’t want to get involved. My choice as is that of everyone here DOn’t like a thread, a poster, a post, just move one If it gets bad enough the post will die on its own or a moderator will do the chop.
Cpt–I’m not for it for the same reasons you are for it–sometimes decent discussions emanate from the “what if” scenarios that get presented by under bridge characters.
Sometimes the under bridge character inserts themselves into the middle of a serious discussion and it disrupts the thread to the detriment of all. Calling them out immediately can keep things on track. But now I guess we’re supposed to let the moderator do the work of calling them out. I think those following a particular thread have a better ear than one moderator could as to if it should be allowed to continue. If there is persistence it has always been an option to have a moderator step in. Now it is possible for one person to make a complaint and one moderator to react to it whereas before it was more of a group decision to discount the character…My two cents on unicorns.
Thanks for the great feedback! Keep in mind that we have often seen the same posts reported by multiple members, so it becomes clear to us very quickly that there is a consensus in the community. We just want to ensure that discussions aren’t splintered by accusations and side conversations about whether said member is legitimate or not. We have several moderators continually monitoring the Reported Posts forum, each of whom has been with the community for a number of years, and they do mutually investigate instances of supposed under bridge character/unicorn sightings.
Ok…here is what is happening. When I typed the forbidden word, it came up with ***. But wheni hit the edit button, it appears as a word, even when I save it!
And I can see the whole word in my above post right now!
ETA but when I leave this area and come back…the *** appear! Weird!
I ensured the word is still in the censorship filter. This software doesn’t actually replace the word in the database with stars like the old site did, but rather ‘cloaks’ them on the spot whenever they are displayed. Now, we’ve seen censored words show up in other places besides the general forum, such as private messages, so this cloaking is not applied universally (though it certainly should be, and I know that is an update that will happen eventually).
No…we can NOT read PMs of other users…even as mods and admins. When we were testing out the censorship filter earlier this year we sent PMs among the mod team with various filtered words.
