New SAT and Scholarships - Apples to Apples or altogether differet?

I am wondering with the schools that publish their scholarship criteria-- how will the new SAT test affect that? Will the criteria change? We are wondering if we should just have our 2017 do the ACT… I am not even sure how effective prep classes will be for the new SAT being as there isn’t the kind of data and such availalbe historically.

She is taking a prep class in high school right now-- they did a pre and post prep test and her score went up significantly on the post (math section)-- this was the old SAT format though. She is going to take the old format in January and see how she does… but we are not sure what to do after that. We are willing to spring for another prep class if needed-- with our 3rd daughter it was well worth the money in the scholarship she got with the higher score.

Our 2017 is our 4th of 5 to be going to college so getting good scholarships is really important and we need to know what she has to shoot for as far as scores. Any insight is welcome.

Some schools have clear cutoffs, others not. I don’t think the new SAT will change that very much, it will become more similar to the ACT I think.

SATs over 1400/1600 and 32 ACT seem to be able to qualify for merit at a lot of places. Together with a high GPA.

So you don’t think average scores will change alot?

? Are you wondering if schools with set merit thresholds will determine a fair equivalent number with the new SAT? I can’t imagine why not.

Have your child take both the SAT and ACT…he may do better on the SAT.

Yes- exactly and I don’t know what those might be… I was definitely thinking on having her do the ACT for two reasons: 1- it will be the same as before so the schools parameters are more likely to remain the same (and we will know what she has to shoot for) and 2- any prep class will be prepared to assist- I am not sure with the new format of the SAT that prep will be as effective

I think in this transition period, I’d definitely take the ACT. I might also take the SAT, but the ACT would be a given, since it’s known, how to prep is established, etc. For my kids, who did take both, ACT is what they used because it was sufficient for schools that would have also required the SAT Subject tests if they’d sent SAT scores.

Only if the ACT score was low would I pursue the SAT…everyone is a guinea pig on that right now.

The old advice to take both still stands, IMO.

My daughter is definitely going to take the January SAT, because she did a prep class in school so she may as well. But I am kind of thinking ACT may be the safer way to go for additional prep and such… I so agree on the Guinea pig thing!
