<p>No. You can't take the class if you're not in a discussion section.</p>

<p>Some are reserved for students with sociology as their declared major, or upper division students.</p>
<p>For the first question: sometimes, but don't count on it. Every semester, I'm in at least one lecture that adds a section or even two for kids on the waitlist. I've found that's especially true in large intro courses. But don't assume there will be a section that you'll be able to get into, so if you really want to take the class, just show up for the first two or three lectures and gauge the possibilities.</p>
