I do feel myself getting magically nicer as I post here in the theatre thread. Triple smiley just to prove it and I’ve never done THAT before anywhere. When I come here I have both hands available to carry my nunchuks but when I post in the MT forum, I need one of my hands to carry my tap shoes. It’s way less complicated over here.

TheaterMom14, you are smart to check on a school by school basis how dance electives can be added into the mix. Sometimes it’s not only a question of fitting them into the schedule, but also one of simply being able to “get” the class if it is popular and if priority scheduling goes to dance majors and upper classmen. But since you have a son and not a daughter, I suspect going directly to the instructor and trying to add the class they’d take one look at HIM and find a way to roll out the red carpet. (Yay a male who wants to learn to dance!)

If you go the BFA acting route (vs. BFA MT), you would be wise to look for a program that includes that kind of training (along with singing) as suggested by actingdad and others above because of the demands of the often prescribed schedule especially in the first couple of years may make doing something one-off pretty tough. I know that in advanced studio years at Tisch there is a little more wiggle room than in the first two years. (I know that is not a school on your list I’m just saying that could be the case elsewhere too so check on it). Good luck!

Bisouu, it’s not that students can’t fit dance classes into thier schedule. In my experience, the classes are usually filled with the students who NEED the classes for their majors/minors that there are no openings for any who would take it as an elective.

I think the differences between BFA and BA programs and what to look for in a program has been answered sufficently. I’d just like to add that although SUNY Purchase does not have an MT BFA program, SUNY Fredonia does (and in my opinion, or at least by comparison, Purchase seems overrated).

Halflokum I will ask those specific questions to getting into dance classes. Tisch looked fabulous, but he doesn’t want to be in the city yet, maybe for a masters.

Theatermom14. I’d COMPLETELY honor his instincts as far as Tisch goes. Undergraduate as a freshman in NYC is a big gulp of water be it Tisch, Fordham, New School, Juilliard and many other wonderful options. There is absolutely no reason to show up for it before you feel like you are ready and NYC isn’t going anywhere. So good call to know it vs. force it.

Theatermom14, on 9/25 at the Jacob Javits Center, there is a Performing Arts College Fair.
You can register online. A lot of the schools your son is interested in will be there…just a thought.

Sfield, thank you. We have thought about and since he’s visited the schools he is looking at or scheduled to, wasn’t sure if going would make a difference.
