new to the site

im new and not sure how this site works....but anyways...i am considering going across the country for school. Everyone in my family is discouraging me b/c of finacial reasons among others. I know I'll miss my family but I feel like if I don't do this, I will be cheating myself. Any comments?

Do what you want...you'll meet a lot of people that are going across the country (or sometimes the world) to do what they want. If you can get the financial aid/pay for it, it doesn't matter what your parents think. You're older now, so you it's time to make your own decisions. I know a lot of people that stayed near home b/c of their parents, and I think they cheated themselves, big time!

Welcome to CC.

Welcome to CC. Every year there is a thread addressing this topic. Just remember that you have a lot of weeks btwn now and when you'd be packing your bags. Give your family sometime to accept your plan. Let them think about you being far away and them coming to visit perhaps. Find some reasons for them to support you. Make your own decision and recognize that many students don't return home for summers because so much opportunity exits. I'd say take you first opportunity to go far and if you hate it, make a switch.
