I think I've mentioned that I know Matt (the article writer) personally. I think that the article makes more sense once you've read more from him, and also since I know him and his interactions with the school, I know he is the kind of person who takes everything apart and looks at it carefully and critically. It's nice to have people who are like that and are as careful in their judgment as somebody like Matt is. Me, personally, I tend to gloss over details and embrace the whole.

I also don't think Matt would be happier at any other school, and he would have just as critical (or more critical) things to say about other institutions.

Personally, I find the "life of the mind" more marketing fluff, but I agree with JohnC and others that it might be more applicable to us. Then again, I do not think any slogan we could come up with for ourselves would encapsulate us in full without being trite, without being condescending, without announcing our greatness.

Oh wait, I just thought of one. It's punchy, tongue-in-cheek, memorable, and says everything it wants to and needs to with a bit of a wink and a nudge that is vastly overlooked by those who take it literally but greatly appreciated by those who have a sense of college humor:

"Where fun comes to die."

Personally, I adore this new configuration. Layout, trite slogans, cluttered space, all of it, really... :O)

Although, yes, I agree; the maroon-ish background does seem blasphemously crimson.
