New York Times - Drinking to Blackout

Indeed. This is certainly not a regular commonplace behavior at Oberlin when I attended in the mid-late '90s. That’s not to say there weren’t classmates who drank to excess or even blacked out.

Just that such occurrences were exceedingly rare and if happened, would be quite memorable because it would be considered unusual and those who partook would incur some negative peer reactions for indulging in what was considered an “uncool” vice students associated with older more conservative establishment elites and their sympathizers.

On the other hand…Oberlin’s campus culture when I was there did have a visible marijuana/psychedelic user culture.

I should also add that just because one’s an engineering or honors student doesn’t necessarily mean one won’t be involved in a given campus’ drinking culture or that it isn’t dominated by them.

For instance, an older cousin who attended URochester in the mid-late '80s and a HS classmate who attended the same university in the mid-late ‘90s both recounted that it was the engineering majors and honors students who were most active in the campus’ party/drinking culture and the fraternity/sorority scene. Both were engineering/CS majors and felt like outsiders for choosing not to participate when they were undergrads there.

I think Oberlin is an outlier in terms of drinking vs. other kinds of partying. Centre might be too, but there are more Centres than Oberlins, culturally speaking.
