New York University - College Essay

I am starting to write my essay for NYU.

The prompt is: We would like to know more about your interest in NYU. We are particularly interested in knowing what motivated you to apply to NYU and more specifically, why you have applied or expressed interest in a particular campus, school, college, program, and/or area of study? If you have applied to more than one, please tell us why you are interested in each of the campuses, schools, colleges, or programs to which you have applied. You may be focused or undecided, or simply open to the options within NYU’s global network; regardless, we want to understand - Why NYU? (400 word maximum)

I am actually really excited to write about the prompt but I am having a really difficult time getting started. I know what kind of things I want to include in the prompt, but typing the first word is taking me hours! So, my question is: do you think I can start out by saying why I like New York? I have a personal experience that made me fall in love with New York City, which is why I want to apply to NYU. But, I am afraid that the admission counselors will think I am in love with New York and not in love with NYU itself. Which is definitely NOT the point I am trying to make at all. I will of course explain why I want to go to NYU and how it can help me accomplish my goals but I feel like starting out with why I like New York might help me get to the part of the essay that I want to. What do you think? Do you think I can start out by talking about what I like about New York City?

Thank You!

Yes, start writing about NYC and get around to NYU.

Hi! I’m a little late on this, but an NYU admissions rep JUST visited my school and really was adamant that applicants avoid putting emphasis on New York City, as it’s overdone. I’m applying as well, and though NYC is a big reason why, after hearing what the admissions rep said I’m going to focus my essay more on programs that are specific to the university but link NYC in by mentioning the opportunities available and how it’s a great cultural backdrop, etc. Feel free to disregard this, but it’s just my two cents and some new information I have

Hi Isabelly212! Thank You so much! You are not late at all! This helped me so much!! If you get any more information on NYU please feel free to share with me  I really like NYU and hopefully I can go there next year!
