For what it is worth, especially to the incoming Columbia class of '16 (so you realize what you are getting into), Columbia placed thusly in Newsweek's College Rankings 2012:

25 Most Rigorous Schools: #1 Columbia University (for the sake of comparison, Harvard is #17)

25 Most Stressful Schools: #3 Columbia University (Harvard #4)

25 Happiest Schools: #14 Columbia University (Harvard #11).

To summarize Newsweek's findings: you will receive the most rigorous education in American higher ed (according to Newsweek); this will stress you out; but, ultimately, you will be rather happy!

Good luck to the incoming class (which includes my very excited little one). And take advantage of the Stress Busters program!!!!

Most rigorous award is status quo. Same deal on college ******* etc . .

Interesting to see stress and happiness not mutually exclusive though. Happiness is so subjective that why even bother trying to compile a list on it. A big workload can easily add stress to someone’s day; that’s a bit more universal than whether someone is or can be happy somewhere . . .

As for Columbia students, try avoiding these kinds of lists and you may be more happy and a fraction less stressed!

Despite the notoriously bizarre ranking methodologies employed by Daily Beast, it’s nice that someone recognizes the level of difficulty at Columbia. Although I might peg Princeton, Caltech, or MIT as being slightly more rigorous, us engineers at Columbia fight just to keep our heads above the water. I’d wouldn’t be surprised if the average GPA of my class barely makes it over 3 :(
