What is the most reasonable step for an econs major at a non-target midwestern school, who could not get any BB,IB,PE during his undergrad years and still wants to become an Ibanker.

It depends. If you are referring to becoming an IBanker without B school, then you will have to do some serious networking and hunt down some small and local advisory shops - they don’t have the prestige, but you’ll definitely do the work and learn the trade very well. If you are considering B school and becoming a banker post B school, then simply move down the chain - if you can’t get into IB, then go for regional consulting, VC, perhaps S&T if you have an interest there, corp development and, of course, you can always pursue Operations - while it is not IB by any means, the experience is valid and if you can get into a good B school, you’ll definitely have a shot at breaking into IB.
