NHS

Thank you @twogirls I’m probably going to be visiting colleges during junior and senior year and will find colleges I will truly enjoy.

Would y’all understand my ECs more if I explain them in a separate thread?

Are you planning to tell us what the club is about…or…are you planning to tell us what you have done, your accomplishments etc…within these clubs/ECs? Remember…it’s not the club, it’s not the title…it’s what you do that matters.

Yeah @twogirls and I will also give a list of awards that I would also use on my College apps in that thread also.

If you want to start a separate thread explaining what you have done/accomplished in HS so far, that is your choice. I am sure people will provide their advice and opinions.

@domt73, to return to the original question about NHS: My daughter became an officer in NHS to fill a perceived need. Do I think this leadership position tipped the scales in her favor? No. I believe her long-term proven commitment to helping others, her passion for her intended area of study, her detailed research regarding each college to which she applied, and her strong, unique essays got her into highly selective colleges.

Wishing you the best with your quest!

Not one bit. Forget about it. It doesn’t matter at all. Waste of time.

@GrandIsland NHS provides heavily used after school peer.tutoring services at our school that I would not characterize as a waste of time.

@VickiSoCal Perhaps so, but the question was not whether it mattered to people who used tutoring, it was whether it “mattered” for admission certain selective colleges. And, I don’t think, on its own, it does matter. The poster didn’t say what he/she was planning to do with it, and if he/she was to spend a significant amount of time doing meaningful tutoring or something, that would be a different question. At my high school, NHS was just something you “joined” when you got a certain GPA, and since anyone who is competitive at ALL for the schools mentioned by OP would qualify for NHS, I don’t think it is something that on its own would “matter” for college admissions. I doubt that anyone didn’t get into one of those schools because they did not joint NHS. So, that’s what I meant. Not that all people who do NHS are wasting their time. Thanks for allowing me to clarify.

@GrandIsland Our school is similar, there is a minimum GPA set and all those who qualify are invited to apply. In my son’s class, there were 130 members out of a class of 295, so not exactly exclusive. That was 2 years ago and I understand now it is a little more selective and there is an interview. But when my D20 was invited to apply and didn’t want to, I didn’t push it with her. She has many ECs that show leadership and passion, I just really don’t think that not having NHS on her list is going to hurt her.

Wow. We had 70 juniors inducted last week (only time it happens) out of a class of 800.

Just for an idea, I’m getting mail from schools like Princeton, University of Chicago, Notre Dame, Duke, and many more and I requested to be on all of my college mailing lists. Is it good to be on their mailing list? I think it does because it shows the colleges I’m interested in their institutions.

No it means nothing to be on the mailing lists for these schools. Please start researching some schools that are more realistic.

This might sound crazy, but I wanna try to start a fundraiser, raise money for it, and travel to a foreign country the summer for my senior year to teach children about forming gardens and doing it, or go to my local elementary school and make a community garden. How do you guys think I should do this?

@domt73, nothing crazy about that, especially if you’re passionate about the project. If you do work with a local elementary school, start talking with teacher who might be interested now. They should be able to link you to the right gatekeepers in the district. I’m making no assumptions about who those might be. I had worked in all sorts of districts. Good luck!

@whidbeyite2002 Think I should start a GoFundMe, if I want to do either of these things?

You could start a GoFundMe, but I believe you need to lay some communication and buy-in groundwork to get the project rolling first. Personally, I would start locally.

@whidbeyite2002 Thanks, probably going to start off at local schools in my town and try stemming out to other towns if possible. I do two sports (Cross Country and Lacrosse) but I probably not going to mention them in my application because they are just hobbies and don’t really show my interests.

Can you get the Environmental Protection Club, Key Club, or the nursery where you work to help support your project? Also, if your school district offers grants for special projects like ours does that might help.

@whidbeyite2002 I might. Should I try to add this as a separate project in my college apps then if I decide to bring any of these clubs involved in it.
