Nice and Quick Chance? Duke University

I'll spare you guys the grueling details and list what I think is most important. Please chance me for Duke.

Asian-American Senior
GPA: 3.98/4.00 Rank, top 5%
SAT: CR 690 MA 740 WR 790 Essay 12/12
SAT2s: Math II: 790 Biology: 700 U.S. History: 780
APs: World History (4), Biology (5), Physics B (3), U.S. History (5), English Language (5), Calc BC, Chemistry, German, Government and Politics, English Literature

Top EXC (won't list minor ones):

Model UN (Best Delegate, Outstanding Delegate)
DECA (Regionals First Place, States Top 10)
Science Olympiad (Invitationals top 5, Regionals top 5)

Tutoring (Elementary schools and City schools)
Student Senate (Representative of student body)
Job Shadowing at local hospital (Chief of Surgery, Anesthesiologist, Ophthalmologist)
Volunteering at local university (ophthalmology and cardiovascular research)

I'm pretty passionate about medicine/medical school. I volunteer and job shadow at the local hospital. I emphasized this during my interviews and wrote many supplements on this passion.

If you want to know anything else please post. We all know how frustrating and nerve racking waiting is, and how hard it is to judge yourself for college chances, so I thank you all for any replies and I'll chance back.

Now based on your statistics, I’m not sure about your chances. The reason is because you don’t seem good at your major. If your passionate about medicine / science, why do you have a 700 in SAT 2 Biology? Also you have a 3 on the Physics AP test. You seem like a good applicant, but your ECs are pretty general. There is no compelling reason to accept you. Also what type of research did you do and did you publish anything?

Good question. My AP class didn’t really cover plants so when it came to labeling the parts (a good 6 questions or so) on the SAT 2 I got quite a hit from that, although colleges won’t care about that fact so no other excuses. Not really sure what happened with physics. I got a 96 on the midterm (which was an old AP test) but didn’t do nearly as well on the actual AP. Sick? I did not publish any papers on cardiovascular research, just attributed to them.

I think you are a decent applicant for Duke. I’d say you have a 65/35 chance of getting in. Good luck.

Thanks for your input SillyStokey.

I chanced you back.

75/25 chance to me. you look like a solid candidate

Thanks for your chance lurn2spel. Good luck in your endeavors at James Madison and Virginia Tech as well!

I would rate you as on target for Duke, and I would not be sweating it too much. Never a sure thing with any of the top 12 schools, but I would say your chances are excellent (if the asian demographic will hurt you is hard to call).

Thanks for the reassurance hinsdale, I’ve read some of your other posts, your chances are definitely very credible.

If you’re interested in medicine and it’s not too late, I would try bouncing some questions off of some of the faculty at Duke who might be involved in courses that would be part of a pre-med track so you can build correspondence into your student file. Otherwise I would say you have a decent shot.

Duke is pretty competitive so I’d give you a 25-35% chance of getting in.

Thanks Proclivity. That is some great advice. Although it is a bit late, it wouldn’t hurt to bounce some emails around. I need to update them with some recent awards I’ve gotten anyways.

Thanks for your input theRADtomato, good luck in your endeavors.

I did the same thing with updating awards. Unfortunately Duke has been unresponsive (I sent two emails to the admissions representative for my area and haven’t receieved any responses).

Sent from my DROIDX using CC App

Im only a sophomore so you might not trust my advice but you are a good chance for getting in. And being Asian gives you a leg up because considering the location of duke, you should expect a good amount of Caucasian students. Colleges look at different races as a way to give their college some diversity.

Hopefully Duke gets back to you Proclivity because I’ll be doing the same thing. I didn’t know you were applying to Duke! Good luck, hopefully we can both say we got accepted on April 1st…

sfurio, any input is appreciated, even if you are a sophomore. Thanks for the kind words, though I’m pretty sure most people consider being Asian a disadvantage when applying to college since there’s so much competition. Duke has about 18% Asian.

I think you have a very good chance at duke, but it is such a selective school, so you never know. Your ECs are solid, your grades and test scores are solid, so there is no reason not to accept you. Unfortunately with schools like duke there are so many applicants that some will get rejected. I think that you have an above 50% chance of getting in.

Thanks Student8654! I chanced you back, you have a pretty solid list going on too.

Yeah, I’m really hoping they do get back to me haha. I feel like it’s not too late to send them stuff until the decisions are released, you never know if your application could be one of the last.

Yup, I sent in my awards updates to a few colleges on Wednesday, and three of them have already gotten back to me and added them on to my file, so I guess it’s not too late. You’re absolutely right, always worth a shot. Not much to lose, either.
