NJ Day School Ranks

Can someone tell me how the following shools Rank?

Newark Academy
Delbarton
Pingry

I am only interested in these three schools and would like to know which one is the best for my son, both academically and socially.

Thanks

Pingry has a new principle few years ago, it really changes.

It is a toss up between Delbarton and Pingry, and they are 2 very different schools. You need to decide which one is a better fit. I think if you are applying to those 2 schools, you should know the differences. A few years ago, Pingry placed more kids in ivies than Lawrenceville.

Didn't D'yer Maker go to Delbarton? Where is he these days...?

Is the principal change in Pingry good or bad?
Also, can you tell me a little more about the difference between Pingry and Delbarton? Thanks.

Both are great schools. Pingry is coed and nonsectarian with a first class athletics program. Delbarton is all boys, Catholic (Benedictine) and places a much greater emphasis on sports.

I don't know Newark Academy at all, and only know Pingry to have a strong academic reputation. But I know Delbarton very well. My son attended Delbarton for six years, graduating last spring. He know attends one of the top universities in America. As the other poster noted, Delbarton is run by Benedictine monks. The monks set the tone spiritually, but almost all the academic teaching is handled by lay teachers. I believe about two-thirds of the student body is Catholic. And although there are occasional Catholic masses held for the student body, I never heard that students of faiths other than Catholic ever felt uncomfortable. The monks set high standards for decency and morality and the students live up to those standards. The acadmic program is outstanding. My sons classes prepared him extremely well for AP exams and for college. The school also has some very strong athletic programs. The last six years Delbarton had outstanding teams in lacrosse, hockey, and soccer, really good teams in football and baseball and some top notch atheletes in other sports such as wrestling. If your son wants to be a competitive lacrosse or hockey player at Delbarton, he better be very, very good. My son wasn't an athelete but found plenty of stuff at Delbarton he loved including music, theater and community service programs. Although there are no girls at the school, this doesn't seem to hold back the boys socially. Delbarton has dances and the like with the all girls schools in the area (Kent Place, etc.). And you always see a lot of these girls at Delbarton athletic events, plays, etc. College placement for my son's class was great. About a third of his class went to Ivies, top LACs or comparable schools. Another third went to excellent schools like Notre Dame, Georgetown, Vanderbuilt, etc. And last, but not least, the campus is gorgeous. I think it's a graet place.

Newark Academy is a fantastic school. It is very intellectually challenging with rigorous courses and outstanding teachers. They teach the kids to think, to question, to challenge and to write, write, write. I am amazed at the quality of education at this school compared to peer institutions. A very cerebral school.

Can anyone comment on Dwight and Trevor?

sorry - was looking too quickly at the thread - I now see this is NJ thread, not NY thread...

Delbarton - 29% acceptance rate, 1380 Ave. SAT 2004, 450 enrolled.
Pingry - 31% acceptance rate, 1350 ave. sat 2004, 510 enrolled.
Newark - 36% acceptance rate, 1280 ave. sat 2004, 410 enrolled.
Villa walsh academy (girls only) - 30% acceptance rate, 1340 ave. sat 2004.

Pingry starts in Kindergarten, so they have fewer new 9th grade spots than Delbarton. Delbarton has a 7th-8th grade, but they still do take about 60 new 9th graders. Pingry takes about 10.

Pingry is known as a pressure cooker. Delbarton is a little more collegial. Newark Academy is an up and comer. Didnt have a good rep in the past, but has done a lot of great things lately.

I know this is a late post, but if anyone ends up reading this…
Newark Academy and Pingry are both very exceptional academic schools in the country. Both have very similar rigorous curriculum and course offerings. Pingry’s statistics in academics are slightly higher than Newark Academy’s but this is most likely due to a larger student body. In the end, either school is fine in terms of academics.

When you look at other things, such as athletics, Newark Academy has some very good teams, such as the famous tennis team or the girls basketball team. However, Pingry probably has the overall edge in terms of athletics. On the other hand, Newark Academy has an outstanding arts program, with a nationally acclaimed jazz band and great arts faculty that surpasses Pingry’s. Newark Academy is also a little more liberal than Pingry, for example in the dress code, Newark Academy is a little more lax. Pingry is also known to have a very rich student population, which may or may not make certain students feel uncomfortable.

On the other hand, Delbarton is quite different. Delbarton is quite simply not as the same level in academics as Newark Academy or Pingry, with a less broad and rigorous curriculum. The arts program is not bad, probably better than Pingry but not as good as Newark Academy. However, the athletics program is outstanding, surpassing both Newark Academy and Pingry. It is definetely also the most strict of all the schools. It is a Catholic school, and is on a campus with a monastery. However, many non-Catholic and non-Christian students attend. It is also all-boys, which may be a factor.

In the end, each school has a different offering. You have to choose what’s best for you. Academics: probably Newark Academy or Pingry. Arts: probably Newark Academy. Athletics: Delbarton.
There are many factors in deciding a school, all these schools are very good and I doubt you will regret much choosing one over another.

For students academically strong in math, science or foreign languages I would recommend Newark Academy over Pingry or Delbarton.

For math about 1% of the student population finishes high school math in middle school and does college math in high school. Every year there is 1 or 2 students that finishes AB/BC calc in 9th grade. And every couple of years are 1 or 2 students that finishes AB/BC calc in 8th grade. After calculus students will student differential equations, multivariate calculus and abstract algebra.

For science chemistry honors or physics honors will give you the background to take SAT Chemistry or SAT Physics tests. Most students take the SAT chemistry or SAT physics test after they take AP chemistry or AP physics. Every year there are 1 or 2 students that take chemistry honors and physics honors in 10th grade. These students will be able to take both IB chemistry and IB physics before they graduate.

For foreign language you will see once in a while see middle school students doing sophomore language in 8th grade and then do AP French or AP Spanish in 10th grade. Some students do two languages in high school.

Aggressive students can take one year’s worth of math or science in summer school. This sounds crazy but every year 1 or 2 students do it.

I have close friends at each of these schools.
Newark Academy is great. Great academics, good athletics, nicest kids. Amazing spirit week!! Requires one semester off campus at a program such as The Island School, Chewonki, etc. Very cool.
Delbarton is all boys and very catholic but amazing school both academically and especially athletically. The boys that go there are often cocky… but you must visit to see if you get that feel!
Pingry is good. My friends don’t love it. Different student body than NA and Delbarton.
