NJIT: Waited Listed?

Hey guys I just got my decision today for NJIT, And it says that I am on the wait list... What does that exactly mean? I got accepted into Rutgers-Newark, and am hoping to get into NJIT, for CS, But I just got wait listed? Is that good? And if I do get accepted, I am kinda on a dilemma on whether I should goto Rutgers-Newark or NJIT for Computer Science.... Any help or insight would be nice right about now...

Thank you... :)

Wait listed means exactly that. You are not rejected and you are not accepted. You are on hold and in reserve if they open up a spot, need to fill a spot or review your application again and decide that you are what they want. Rutgers-Newark has accepted you and their intentions are very clear. They want you to attend and have extended you an offer. At this moment in time you have just one choice not two. What I would do is call NJIT and ask them when they will notify wait listed students of a final decision. Then you can respond to Rutgers as appropriate.

Thanks OsakaDad, and I do know that I have only one choice at this very moment of where I am going, I have been wait listed, not accepted into NJIT. I just asked if I do Get accepted, which one should I choose, on the basis that I do get accepted… Thanks for the advice, I will be calling up NJIT shortly, and as for Rutgers I already sent in my deposit to secure a spot, But will be sending in a letter to NJIT to see if I can increase my chances of acceptance…

Also imo worth asking (if you don’t know) if their waiting list is ranked, if so whether or not they can disclose your rank, and about what % of the waitlist ends up being accepted.

I am not that familiar with either school as we are in California. However, We had a similar choice with my son who is studying engineering. My son had a choice between UCLA and UC San Diego and California Polytechnic State University San Luis Obispo. Back East you probably have not heard of Cal Poly SLO, but the difference out here is really dramatic and all three schools have outstanding reputations. We chose Cal Poly SLO because it is an experiential program. All learn by doing and hands on all classes held by professors. Very practical and less emphasis on theory and research – a real world direct application program. UCLA and UCSD take two years doing GE’s and you don’t get into you engineering classes until you are a junior. It is more theory and all research. So, find out which program is more like Cal Poly SLO (my assumption is NJIT) and which is like UCLA / UCSD (possibly Rutgers). Dig deep into the program and decide which philosophy you like best. Check starting salaries and employment upon gradation stats too. Believe it or not Cal Poly SLO beats all other programs in CA for that too. Hope this helps.

NJIT’s a decent place. I’m not sure what Rutgers’ CS program is like, but I can tell you that the one here at NJIT, which I am in, is not bad  aside from that it really depends on what sort of college environment you’re looking for. From what I gather, a larger school like Rutgers -may- focus more on theory and research, while I know NJIT’s focus is more on future career opportunities, given its origin as a vocational institute. Opportunities at NJIT are what you make of them. Less opportunities because it’s smaller, but higher chance to get hold of one because of lower student population and such. Also, we’re close to NYC, Newark Airport and Newark Penn!

KK thanks for all the info guys! :D
