NMSF to NMF: Questions, thoughts, and some overthinking

Hi! So I was designated a semi-finalist this past September (congrats to those of you who made it as well!) and I was shocked as well as filled with hope as to the possibilities this opportunity could open for me. However, it’s also been keeping me up at night as I skim through articles and threads, trying to find some sense of reassurance in my hopes of advancing towards the Finalist standing.

My score on the SAT this year was a 1470 super score, but I understand that the NSMC only looks at the highest set of scores from one administration. I took the SAT twice, scoring a 1460 in both instances; however, I understand that reading and writing hold a little more weight, so my highest index is a 222. Is that safe?

Another concern: I hadn’t realized that my scores were not sent to the NSMC until today. I immediately sent them out through college board but can feel the anxiety and panic brewing inside of me as I keep wondering if this careless mistake could have costed me my finalist standing. Looking over the requirements, it is stated that scores need to be received by January 31st of the LATEST; however, if sent after December 31st, you will not be considered for full award. Does this mean I’m automatically out? Or is it saying that I won’t qualify for the $2,500 NMSC scholarships? Will this hurt my chances of becoming a finalist?

I also heard some rumors that rejection letters are sent out during early to mid January, meaning if that you hadn’t received word by then you’re most likely in the clear. Is that true?

Lastly, I am currently enrolled in a highschool dual enrollment program where students have the opportunity to earn their associates alongside their highschool diploma when they graduate their senior year. I have always been in good academic standing: my GPA is almost at a 3.7 unweighted with my weighted being a 4.7. I have never received any C’s in my highschool classes, earning almost all A’s and taking AP and honors classes. However, due to some circumstances, I earned two D’s in my college classes the spring semester of my junior year. All other college grades are A’s and B’s. Will this possibly lead to rejection from the NSMC?

Sorry for all the questions! I’ve been losing so much sleep over this so any input would be greatly appreciated.

I hope everything is going well for you, @suiling2000. You have a fantastic academic statistics. Hope that counters the two Ds. National merit takes a holistic view and hope they ignore college level grades to be fair to you. I am surprised that no one responded to your question. Hold tight and good luck. Hopefully, you will become a finalist!
