No background knowledge?

I decided I wanted to major in bme after my junior year. I had just taken calc and I did really well and enjoyed it a lot. I was also leaning toward some kind of medical career so I decided that bme would be a good mix of both. Because I had zero experience in engineering I decided to take a class at my school called engineering technology because I thought it would be like an intro course. Turns out that most of the kids in there already know a lot about engineering and building things etc etc. I'm afraid that the same situation will happen in college too. So my question (after all this rambling) is basically can I do well in engineering without any kind of background knowledge or is prior experience with robotics and such things kind of implied? Your advice would really help me out. Thanks!

absolutely dont worry, you need no background knowledge.

You’re fine. The kids who assume they already know stuff might actually be at a disadvantage because of their background knowledge; which is probably wrong.

This should not be a problem. I’m a mechanical engineer and before I started college I was so ignorant I didn’t even know what a piston in an engine was.

Son is a freshman in engineering.
He did not have any engineering experience, did not take AP calc and did not take chem at all in HS (though he did take AP Bio, AP physics…)
He was accepted to all schools he applied to and is very happy at his chosen school and did very well first semester, with the full course load.

You will be fine!
